i'm *mostly* vegan... was into the veggie thing in high school, but it's hard when your Mama still buys/cooks your food LOL. I when totally veggie in college, then vegan a short while after. I'm keepin' on with it, but I admit I've "slipped" a little since I started keeping kosher. So many dietary restrictions! I've been known to eat a little mayo on Shabbos, and to "taste" things my carniverious hubby makes (ohhh...like feta cheese). I try to do organic all the time, but when dh goes shopping he foils my plans, 'cause he thinks organic food is a "yuppie" waste of money... it kinda is... gotta start that garden! it's hard in NYC, though!

I went from a strict vegan to a mostly vegan when I was pregant. Found I felt better with some animal protein. We eat a lot of eggs because we have our own chickens. Not much dairy - a little yogurt and cheese for the kids. Chicken, turkey or fish about once a week. Lots of tofu. We all love it in any way even my husband. All whole foods - no refined grains or flour in the house!

Just a quick note for those of you who want to give up cheese but can't yet... there's a great vegan cheese on the market that tastes great and melts. In the past you could have one but not the other... but that's all changed.

Go to www.imearthkind.com to check it out. It's a little expensive to ship, but if you live someplace where they sell it, I highly recommend it.

I've used the cheese to make pizza, lasagna, and quesadillas and I have been really happy with the results. They have a mozarella, nacho cheese flavor, and caraway jack.

Have been veggie since aged 11, then went vegan at 18, been vegan for 11 yrs. Raised my kids vegan. Dh eats veggie at work. I love being vegan but my eldest seems so unhappy as she longs to cook with eggs and milk- so am in the process of deciding what to do- what is the best for us all. We buy vegan cheese here in the UK but it is very expensive, doesn't melt and is very high in sodium.

It's interesting reading the replies! We're now veggie after I was vegan for 10 years. Worry about health but think the worrying is worse for me than the food. Got fed up with restricting my kids and felt I was always making a battle out of food.

I voted "other" because though I do not ID as vegetarian or vegan, I don't love it all. I eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains, I eat plenty of dairy (yogurt and cheese every day!) and eat eggs, some chicken and fish, and a whole lotta chocolate. I do not enjoy the taste or texture of red meat, so I stay away from that. People often ask if (and sometimes even why) I'm vegetarian, I guess because those who dine frequently with me (co workers, extended family) construe many of my food choices as in keeping with the way vegetarians eat.

We like to call ourselves Ethical Vegetarians. We eat eggs and some milk products, but only organic/cruelty free. Like cage free eggs, organic milk from mama cows, non-gmo soy products,...

We buy cruelty free products as well ( like shoes, makeup , etc)

Love tofu, tempeh rice pasta veggies fruits....Sometime like but mostly avoid soy fast food like the 'chick' nuggets, burgers, etc.

But LOVE the veggie bacon...can't get off that stuff.....

My little girls fav veggie song....
"I don't eat animals
cuz they don't eat me....."

I'm mostly vegan.

I eat butter occasionally instead of margarine, and I eat honey. I also have a few things made of leather that have been given to me. Otherwise, I'm vegan. And I love it. And I try to eat whole foods. It's been a very good lifestyle for me, and I don't see myself ever changing. Next month will be my tenth anniversary as a vegan, eleventh as a vegetarian.

I am mostly vegan, but vegetarian because we eat limited dairy. I never liked meat, even as a kid- I know that sounds weird- but if we were given chili, I'd pick the kidney beans out and eat them and try not to touch the meat. I flat out disn't like the taste or texture- whcih drove my mom nuts.

I'm vegetarian, have been for 9 years, and I'm striving to be vegan.. Trying to find a soy cheese, soy ice cream and soy/rice/almond, etc milk that i like.. any suggestions? i was raised as a meat eater, never really liked it, so switched when i was 16.. boy was my dad mad!! so now i'm struggling to acquire a 'taste' for soy milk

my son is completely vegan, and my daughter will be too.. just fed on good momma's milk now... all my kids will be vegan for as long as possible, but when they are old enough, they will be able to choose whether or not to try meat. hope they don't!

oh and my hubby eats meat, mostly outside the home (i don't cook it, but he sometimes bbq's).. would love if he would be veggie too, but oh well!

I'm not a big fan of soy ice cream substitutes for several reasons - many of them, like Tofutti - have a lot of chemicals and additives that I think are worse than eating dairy, most are high in sugar, and many taste gross - though soydelicious isn't too bad.

Here's an easy recipe to make your own icecream - no sugar and no dairy.

Strawberry-Banana Cream

1 cup frozen sliced bananas
1 cup frozen strawberries
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/4 to 1/2 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)

In a food processor, pulse fruit until coarsely chopped. Add milk a little at a time through top of processor, and puree until creamy. Serve immediately, or freeze in individual-size containers for later.

Yield: 4 servings

Note: Try this with frozen peaches too.

Amasake Cream

1 cup frozen peach slices
1 cup frozen raspberries
1/4 to 1/2 cup amasake

In a food processor, pulse fruit until coarsely chopped. Add amasake a little at a time through top of pro-cessor, and puree until creamy. Serve immediately, or freeze in individual-size containers for later.

Yield: 4 servings

Mango Sorbet

2 cups frozen, diced mango
1/4 to 1/2 cup unsweetened pineapple juice

In a food processor, pulse fruit until coarsely chopped. Add juice a little at a time through top of processor, and puree until creamy. Serve immediately, or freeze in individual-size containers for later.

Yield: 4 servings

Variation: Mango Ice Cream: Substitute milk (dairy or non-dairy) for pineapple juice.

Proud to be veggie

I am new vegan...just kinda "converted " overnight.... I was a vegetarian as a teenager but when your parents do the cooking and the buying...it was difficult ...and back then (which wasnt that many years ago) there was hardly anything out there...but now its my daughter and i and she loves being vegan...she is compassionate to animals and when i told her what a burger was ...it was all done with.. altho she loves her "pretend chicken" and her veggie burgers... she's constantly telling people everywhere " i wont it that...it has animals in it"...lol..so cute...and now that shes found cartoon characters that are vegetarian she's happy.... lol....

Shelly, We don't live too far apart...there are tons of delicous soy milks etc out there... its a matter of what your tastebuds like... i personally like Silk fortified regular and love there chocolate, also So Good and So Nice are good because they have those aseptic packages that doesnt have to be chilled until you want them...and when they go on sale i stock up.... my daughter and i love SoyDream ice cream and soy delicious..but i love the chocolate ...i have a chocolate tooth...lol... theres this good Mori Nu Tofu pudding mix that you mix with a package of tofu and its good...again i love chocolate... and of course Fortino's has the Presidents choice Too Good to Be True soy pudding...mmmmmmmmm .... ok now im hungry... off to raid the fridge since my DD is in bed

I voted other.

I basically eat a vegetarian diet 99% of the time. So, no meat but I do eat dairy. However, I will eat chicken maybe 1 meal a month. Haven't touched it in a couple months, though, since I learned that chicken is LOADED with hormones. Yuck. I don't want to pass that to dd.

We're vegetarian here - well, except for DH. But we never have meat/chicken/fish inside the house. He eats his meat when we go out!
We do however do eggs and dairy. I just can't give up my cheese!

I am an omnivore..I eat it all.

I have eaten at the homes of folks who were vegetarian and ..well. I know it was not nice perse, but I hit MDonalds after I left their place.

I eat chicken a lot, and eggs, and cheese. I don't care for teh taste of milk unless it is skim ..although I do drink 2% now.

i really don't like fish AT ALL but ate tons of it when I was preganat with Emily. With Paul it was peanut butter adn jelly sandwiches...

I do not cook organ meats, fish, or pork. I usually either make meals with eithr chicken or hamburger.

Once upon a time we bought beef from my husbands cousin( he raises beef cows down the road) and then we had pot roasts and steaks and so on.

I think I could be a vegetarian if I could still eat cheese and eggs.I KNOW I could never be vegan.

My husband is on the atkins diet and he just east meat now..bluck after awhile.

Hi. Dh is vegetarian and I eat some fish only on occasion and only out. We both eat cheese and dairy as well.

I don't eat beef, and I eat very little pork... otherwise I eat it all.

DH will eat anything.
