help me help a friend. toddler development

I have a friend who's son is a few weeks older than my dd (17 months). We get together regularly for playdates. She is alot like I was when my ds (now nearly 6) was that age. She's kind of crunchy, open to new ideas but uneducated in GD and AP. We've skirted the issue a few times but I don't know here that well and don't want to critisize her parenting as all in all she is doing a good job. Her ds is starting to enter that stage where everything is a chalange though and she's not sure how to handle it. I'm confident she would never spank, but I saw her give him a time out today (it lasted about 30 sec.) Now I'm not compleatly against timeouts, I know many hear would disagree but I don't think even the "experts" who recomend time outs recomend them for children that young.

So I'm wondering if anyone can recomend for me a good web page about toddler developmentaly appropriate behaviour that I can direct her to. Or maybe a book, but both our budgets are tight and our library dosn't have a very good selection.

How about UNCONDITIONAL PARENTING by Alfie Kohn? If your library doesn't have it, you can request that they order it. It is very popular, and excellent, too. Personally, I think it's worth purchasing. I've lent my copy to several people already and it is a great book to keep around to refresh yourself with as your child grows.
