Until they hit puberty there is no real need to even retract, rince, replace. If u notice they can retract and have them do it in the bath when they r little but they r the only one who should be doing it since they know when it hurts. So u can work with them just like teaching a little girl how to wash her bottom. Just dont worry to much if they dont do it every bath. By the time they hit puberty they will usually figure out they should rinse under it. FM as long as they were the ones doing the pulling back it isnt a problem. Since they wouldnt hurt thereselves on purpose. A side note dont use soap on when retracting as this can cause stinging and possible infection depending on how sensitive there skin is. Just like some soap can make u burn if u get it on ur genitals.

It is not okay to hit a health care worker.
I agree in most cases, but pushing their hands away when they're trying to basically do the male equivilent of breaking the hymen for NO REAL REASON is pretty justified. In the case of "pick your baby up" I know that a healthcare worker was trying to retract and he was on my lap, I couldn't really move him fast enough so i grabbed the doctors hands and pushed them away. I didn't smack him or anything.

Thank you for this. I knew not to do it, but I didn't know the particulars, and I definitely didn't know that there were so many ped's/nurses out there who would forcibly do it!

I will add everything I printed out here to my traveling medical library that comes with us to all the visits.

for anyone that might have missed it the first time. Just to important a issue to not keep out there.

and I still maintain that I would slap ANYone's hands away, no matter how hard I had to do it, to keep them from hurting him.,

I had one, but only once. I've been seeing the same doctors my whole life, and it's never come up, so I never thought about. However, they had a doctor in subbing, and I'm pretty sure she retracted ds2...although it was so quick that I'm not sure I didn't imagine it. I was totally taken aback, because I had no idea any medpro would do that!

for the new year.

and bump again!

I had read the sticky on the circ board and thought "Oh, that wouldn't happen at our ped; they're anti-circ." Well, I take ds for his 6-month checkup and the nurse practitioner pulls his foreskin apart and up just a little bit. I was a little shocked at the time, but thought that wasn't really a retraction (I know zero about foreskins!). But that night poor ds wakes up screaming! I go to change his diaper and he is all red and swollen. Poor little guy. It was fine in a couple of days, but ouch!

Yes, it's too bad that Americans have been so busy cutting it off, they haven't figured out anything about it and so the nurses/doctors aren't taught foreskin care.... :

I really like our pediatrician and kind of knew that he would never retract the forskin but as we were taking Harvests diaper off I mentioned it casually just to make sure. I was like, "You dont retract forskin right?" And he was like, "Gosh no, that is not necessary. That happens naturally when they are much older."
I was so relieved. I am going to stick with him.
Thanks for the thread.

Oh THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for posting this and bumping it for the new year too. If dd had been a ds, were were not going to circ. If any furture babes are boys, we are not going to circ. I had no idea that I would have to keep a eye out for health care providers doing something like this. I mean, heck if I know not to retract, I would assume they would know too.

That is great but be aware that some Dr. will tell you they dont retract but their definition of retraction means pushing the foreskin all the way back. They dont realize that any pushing back of the foreskin even a tiny bit falls under the heading of retraction.

anyone who wants more info should come over to "The Case against Circumcision" forum. The ladies there seem to know everything!

Of all the things I could say about our pediatrician, most of which aren't flattering, at LEAST he knows about leaving my son's penis alone! It was actually amusing to me because he felt the need to inform me that I shouldn't retract the forskin...at the 3 year well child visit. I don't think he'd actually mentioned it before then. Oh well, at least I don't have to worry about that particular error being passed along!

I am looking for a new Doc (we moved) I think that will be the first thing that I am going to mention, don't retract him. I am so so so sorry to all you mamas that had this happen your ds.

Be sure to phrase it were there is no mistaking by the Dr. tell them do not touch his penis, or dont move his foreskin at all because some Dr. think just pushing it back a little is ok and it isnt it is retraction.

You can also just keep your hand over your son's penis; doctors often want to check for descended testicles, but there's no reason to touch the penis unless you think there's a reason, so better to just keep a casual hand over it just in case!
