First birth since my own...11 lbs plus...

I am so excited to share this story with everyone! Keep reading - I promise it is worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So Scarlett and I have attended our first birth since her being in the womb...It was amazing. My sister was expecting her second baby and we flew up for the event. We arrived the day before her due date (last time she went on her due date and so did I and so did my other sister ). She was really uncomfortable and felt very ready to have the baby. My whole family kept telling me she was "just huge" before I came up which was annoying. She looked full term to me and gorgeous. She asked me to do a stretch and sweep when she hadn't gone into labour one day after her due date. It was interesting having an informed choice discussion with a relative! So I gave her some homeopathics to try first. Then I gave her a foot rub and concentrated on a few key labour inducing spots. A few contractions but nothing major. The next day she was adament that i do a stretch and sweep. So I did - (major sister bonding moment ). My mother who is a nurse thought this was scandalous as I was "treating" a relative. I told her, midwifery isn't medicine. Women have been attending other women forever. And besides, she wasn't sick, just pregnant...I don't think you can "treat" normal right? Anywho, the s&s got things going. Hurray!

So, of course, labour starts at the same time as a huge rain storm. Trees are down and we can't seem to reach her midwife by pager (it took us about two hours to get in touch). Long story short, she laboured beautifully! I was able to catch the baby (she pushed for only 20 minutes)...

Scarlett slept throught the whole thing in the sling (everyone was surprised at this due to the noises of birth but she did attend quite a few births inutero and so she must have been used to it

The other interesting this Scarlett did was when my sister was having strong contractions, Scarlett (who was still sleeping) would do these lamaze type breathing noises that stopped and started in unison with my sisters contractions - I have it on tape and it was crazy!!!

This is how the birth of the baby went...

Me: "The baby's head is crowning"
Sister: giving tiny pushes
Me: Okay give a push for the eyes,...nose....mouth...chin...
In my head thinking "hmmmmm"...

Finally the head is out and there is a severe turtle neck...worried about shoulders...did a bunch of things to deliver shoulders and finally they come..SLOWLY...

Me: Okay push for the other shoulder,...the nipples..the belly button...the legs...
Ha ha ha ha...It was the slowest birth of a baby I have ever seen!

The baby did great and so did my sister.

NO TEARS! THis is amazing BECAUSE...

He was 11 pounds 4 ounces :

AND her placenta weighed in at 2 pounds 4 ounces!!!

So welcome to the world Delsin William! And congratulations to my incredible sister! Hurray!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
