I had my first appointment yesterday and it went pretty well. I'm just going to paste my entry into my blog so I don't have to type it out again.
I had my first prenatal appointment today and it was determined that I am 11 weeks pregnant. My uterus was spot on and the doctor found the heartbeat with no problem. I was a little weirded out because the nurse had me undress before the doctor ever came in. I'd never met this doctor before and here I am wearing this weird paper gown and clutching a sheet over my breasts when he walks in and introduces himself. Did I mention the weird paper gown? They must make them one size fits large because I would have been swimming in half of it. After the formalities and discussing my past mental health issues and my refusal to take medication while pregnant he felt my breasts for rot and did the girly exam. It wasn't that bad of a girly exam. The best one I had was by an older man and the worst was from a female OB. I'd rate today's at an 8. He did do the anal invasion (sigh) and felt my bone structure. He told me I had a narrow pelvis and was totally shocked that I was able to give birth vaginally, let alone naturally and at home. He kind of had to reaffirm that to himself a few times and I was pretty amused. Face it, I pushed an almost 9 lb baby out of a narrow pelvis with no medical interventions. I pointed out to the doctor that relaxin and positioning is a good thing and it goes to show that even women with narrow pelvises can give birth vaginally.
He checked for heart tones and found the heartbeat within seconds. It was going at a strong 156 bpm and sounded pretty good. We discussed the cystic fibrosis test (which I tested negative for with Scott) and agreed that it was unecessary. He also talked about the next appointment and that they will be sticking me for blood yet again to test for Downs and something else, probably the Trisomy disorders. I was happy because he didn't down talk me over my choice to homebirth and said nothing to discourage me from breastfeeding. Not bad. I'll definitely be keeping him as my family doctor
