I could not find it, but I had sent them an e-mail about how I felt about how cruel circ was and blah blah blah, and telling them instead of paying for it they should be educating parents not to circ their boys. Well they e-mailed me back and said they will take my suggetion into consideration the next time they review this matter . I sure hope they ment it!!!!!

St. B. Hospital cuts circumcisions
Last Updated May 19 2006 03:46 PM CDT
CBC News
Circumcisions will no longer be performed on newborn boys at St. Boniface Hospital
in Winnipeg, hospital officials announced Friday.
The move comes in response to the investigation into the case of a boy who was
mistakenly circumcised at the hospital last November.
Hospital officials said the identities of two baby boys on the same ward got mixed
up. The family of the boy who was circumcised had not yet made a decision about
whether to have the procedure done.
FROM NOV. 18, 2005: Hospital circumcises wrong baby:
http://www.cbc.ca/manitoba/story/mb-...e20051118.html
Hospital and regional health officials investigated the incident and released a
series of recommendations to ensure the identities of infants were confirmed and
reconfirmed before the procedure took place.
Since receiving the review, the chief medical officer at St. Boniface has decided
not to reinstate the program, which was suspended after the incident.
Dr. Bruce Roe, the hospital's chief medical officer, said it was "more appropriate"
for circumcisions to take place in outpatient clinics after the family has been
released from the hospital.
Officials at the hospital say the patient identity recommendations - including a
series of verification checklists - will now be completed before any procedures are
carried out on babies to prevent similar errors in the future.
A parent will also be required to accompany the child to the procedure room, and the
doctor must verify the identity of the child.
The Canadian Pediatric Society does not recommend routine circumcision of male
infants. Some parents, however, have the procedure done for personal, religious or
cultural reasons.

But, Mb hasnt paid for circs for a while now. Unless of course, you get a doc saying that its "necessary" for some strange reason......
But, I have to say I'm quite confused. When my ds was born 6 years ago, we were told by our ped that he could do it for us in the hospital, but we would have to pay (we declined). By the time my nephew was born 3 years later, they were told to call (one of the 2-3 dr's who still do it) after they got home from the hospital and then they would set up day surgery (of course all paid for out of pocket). But bottom line, it's not paid for. I guess I'm confused why you think its paid for?
But how great is the no circing at ST. B? BTW, thats the same hospital that David (cant remember his name RIP) was butchered at........

Shenjall - maybe it depends where you're at in the province? I know that up north, they're still getting paid for, if the parent requests it, and the rates are still quite high... though going down slowly.
The province does still pay for them. I've written letters & always get the "we'll review it next time" response, but so far, they haven't officially stopped paying.

Quote:
| April 25, 2005 Dear Mr. Harrison: Thank you for your follow-up letter regarding infant male circumcision. I appreciate the opportunity to clarify my previous response to you. When tariffs are negotiated into the Physician’s Manual, Manitoba Health along with the Manitoba Medical Association determines the rules that govern the payment of procedures. In the case of two tariffs for circumcision, the following was determined: one tariff would be for newborns under 30 days old and would not require further information reported on the claim for service one tariff would be for males over 30 days old with medical conditions reported on the claim for service Our Government recognizes that there are different points of view with respect to infant male circumcision. Therefore, we rely on the advice of the medical professionals who render these services. I hope that this information has addressed your concerns. Sincerely, [signed] Tim Sale |

Well I'm just further confused. (which doesnt take much
)
I know our ped at the time told us we would have to pay for the procedure, but his fees/hospital/anestheologist were all covered under mb health. But, he was [I]so kind[I]to put down that my ds needed it 'cause he was preemie. (yes, at the time we were considering it). Interestingly enough, it was the nurses at st. boniface that refused to give me a consent form to sign. I even spoke to the head nurse and she stated, "circ is not medically necessary. we dont do them here anymore. make an appt with your ped after you discharge from the hospital". When my nephew was born 3yrs later, they were told the same thing. They left, made the appt and paid the almost $200 fee.
Maybe whats being paid for is dr's fees still? I dont know. Dang, here I thought we didnt pay for them. Guess I have to sharpen my pencil and get writing to make sure.
Thanks for bringing it to my attention!
p.s. I'm in winnipeg
