Gripe Water - have you tried it? brand recommendations?

Hi! Thanks in advance for your help!

I have a 4 wk. old exclusively breastfed baby. He seems to have a sensitive stomach, and I've already pinpointed dairy, onions, and spices as being troublesome and am avoiding them completely.

He still, however, every other day or so, will have horrible stomach cramps (you can hear the gurgling and feel his little body tense up) accompanied by a screaming crying jag and followed by release of much gas/BM.

I have heard about "gripe water" for colic-y babies, and after reading a bit about it, would consider trying it when he is hurting to see if it would help. The different brands I've seen have a wide variety of ingredients, from ginger, fennel, and sodium bicarbonate; to all herbal oils. Which brands have you tried/ would you recommend any of them? TIA!

We've used it, it does seem to help. I can't remember the brand name though... we had an Indian-type shop in the cities that my mom went to and picked some up for us.

We have tried it with great success and mostly use the baby bliss brand, although I am trying to get my store to stock the Wellements brand organic stuff!

Our boy loves it and it has immediate results!! A miracle when he was littler and colicky, we still use it occasionally for upset tummy!

My IL's were trying to push gripe water on us. I couldn't figure out what was in the bottle they brought us, and I refused to use it.

My MIL did make something that I would suggest as a first step for a fussy stomach. Boil ajwain seeds (this is an indian seed, available at indian groceries and maybe others) in a little water to make a sort of tea. Then cool that tea and give a spoon or two to baby, without the seeds.

I don't know why I got so weird about gripe water, but it just seems to have too many ingredients, and I felt better trying just one thing at a time.

my midwife suggested i drink fennel tea, as it would be passed along to him in my milk. Fennel is an ingredient in gripe water. It seemed to do the trick!

It costs just pennies to make and you don't have the preservatives then.

Gripe Water

Crush 1 tsp of fennel seeds, place in cup with 1 tsp baking soda.
Pour 1 1/4 cups of boiling water over them and steep for 20 minutes.

Strain and discard the seeds.
Store in the refrigerator.

Give baby 1-2 tsp for stomache pain.

We had the same problem with our DD, poor thing, right around the same time. We used Baby Bliss Gripewater with pretty good success.

Our problems turned out to be dietary as well. I eliminated dairy, onions and tomatoes, with some good results, but something was still bothering her. It turned out to be soy and apparantly that is pretty common in babies with a sensitivity to dairy. You might consider eliminating that as well - it made a huge difference for us. I also started keeping a detailed food diary and found out a couple of other things that bothered DD as well - just less severely. Since I eliminated all of these things (when dd was between 6 - 8 weeks) I have only used gripewater a handful of times in several months (usually when I "accidently" had some dairy at a restaurant or something).

One more thing - are you checking for "hidden" dairy? I made the mistake of continuing to use a couple of products I had no idea had casein or whey protein in it, which she would react to even in small amounts. I thought I was really being careful about label reading but somehow a couple of things slipped by (like my whole wheat bread that had soy flour added - WTH??)

My first thought was dairy elimination. I took it out of my diet with my first child and it helped her immensely. I have been spotty about it with my second, because I wasn't sure it was needed, but I think I need to face reality at this point and give up dairy for a while again. *sigh* It can make a big difference for a lot of babies, and it's not permanent.

Another possibility to consider is taking your kid to a homeopath. We've had success in that realm as well.

My little guy is 3mths and has gerd. We used the organic version of the gripe water starting when he was around 6 weeks. It seemed to really help him release the gas. It has fennel, ginger extract and chamomile in it. It was also suggested to me to try a bit of chamomile tea that has been sweetened with sugar- not honey babies cannot digest it I was told. I never tried the chamomile, since the gripe water worked well. My ped. told me they have been using it in Europe for years, but it was just recently approved for use in the US. Hope this helps.

We used Baby's Bliss - dd didn't like the taste of the other brand. We never thought of making our own, though. I would have liked that idea b/c I could control what went in it.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I hadn't heard about soy also being problematic, and I do frequently consume soy products-I'm going to cut that out as well and see if it eases up.

If it doesn't, I'm going to try fennel (I have the extract on hand) and perhaps the organic gripe water... after doing more reading I don't want the ones that have the sodium bicarbonate unless things get pretty rough.

We use Colic-Ease. They have a big thing on their website about how bad sodium bicarbonate / baking soda is for babies. I don't know how legitimate this is, or if it's just an effort to get you to buy their product, lol. But I use it because it seems to help. My almost 10 mo old is still very gassy, especially at night (I can find no connection to my diet, even after doing a total elimination diet for months!). The Colic-Ease almost always helps, although sometimes it seems to "wear off" after 30 or 60 minutes. But at 4 AM, I'm just grateful for another hour of sleep, kwim?

I don't like that it has fructose in it, as it seems all of them do (except for homemade of course), but there doesn't seem to be much to do about that.

And I was really sold on its effectiveness when *I* had terrible gas one night, and was up for hours writhing in pain, and suddenly had the idea of taking some (after I tried mylicon and it did NOTHING). Within minutes the pain was gone, and soon after I was eliminating the, uh, problem, lol.

Same for us. We bought gripe water (Baby's Bliss). It did nothing at all for our baby. The dairy elimination seems to help us, along with taking out caffeine. On bad days though I use simehicone drops and it seems to help a little. Although with time, the digestion system of my baby is getting better, so we hardly ever use the drops at all.

How do you get them to take it?

On other boards, the Moms have not been any help on this issue. (They respond, "Gee, we use XYZ formula to help with stomach pain," or "well, of course, just put it in his bottle.") I'm hoping I'll have better luck here.

I tried the Baby Bliss grips water with DS, who tends to have stomach cramps and spits up frequently, and I have not been able to tie this to any particular thing in my diet. However, he is only 2 months old, and is EBF. The dosage amount is a pretty significant amount of liquid, and I can't seem to get him to ingest it without major choking, etc. I don't have a finger-feeder, but have tried that method using a syringe. I was only able to give him half doses, because I couldn't do the second half of the dose after the crying and choking over the first one.

I also tried mixing it in a bottle of EBM, but it certainly affected the taste of the milk, and I could barely get him to drink it all. I hate wasting breastmilk.

For those of you giving gripe water to younger babies, how do you get them to take it?

I know it does seem like a lot of liquid for a tiny baby. We use the Wellement version- I assume the same dosage. I used a syringe from about a month and half old. He did choke a bit the first couple of dosages- I think just getting used to the syringe. Since, he has gotten used to it he takes it no problem. I just put the syringe in his mouth aimed at the inside of his cheek and let him suck on it as if it was my nipple. Everytime he sucks I squirt a little bit in his mouth. This seems to work for us. HTH

FWIW, Gripe Water did nothing to help with DS's gas, it was exactly how you described your baby's. We also tried the Mycelon (sp?) drops, that didn't help.

What DID help was cutting out dairy, beans, broccoli/cauliflower, and wheat. That helped lessen his gas a lot. There are still times when he gets upset and I know it is from gas- we have found that the homeopathic remedies REALLY work for DS. The first one we tried are "Colic Tablets" and they worked miracles. But because they were dairy based, it seemed to cause our thrush to come back (another story) so we tried another brand, Cocyntal, and it also works well. I hated the idea of calling it "Colic" but apparently a lot of colicyness (is that a word?) is a result of gassiness. so it makes sense that the remedies would work.

Just a suggestion in case the gripe water doesn't work!

I tried the homemade recipe and so far it seems to be helping my middle girl who has the most gas issues. Of course, it's only been a day so maybe she is just tired from not getting a lot of restful sleep? But it was so easy to make, you might want to give it a try.
