Positive comment on Will & Grace finale

I must be the only one still watching this show! This weekend we finally watched the tivo'd finale that aired on Thursday night.

Hopefully this won't be a spoiler for anyone. This season Grace discovered that she was pregnant, and in the finale they fast-forward about two years to this discussion:

Grace: Lila was so skinny her whole first year!
Will: Well, what were you feeding her?
Grace: The boob! (accompanied by an "of course!" kind of shrug)

-- of course they wouldn't let it slide without a "Grace's breasts are small" joke, so Will then says, "Ah, portion control."

I just loved that a) she was so matter of fact about it, like, "duh, of course I breastfed", and b) she was talking about the 'whole first year', so apparently Grace was exclusively BFing to a year too? (Am I reaching too far on that one? )

I know that Debra Messing was nursing her son (born around the same time as mine) for at least a year... so I'm not surprised that this kind of casual reference made its way onto the show. I like this sort of thing, it seems to normalize breastfeeding.

I noticed that, too. Overall, I was a bit disappointed with the season finale, but maybe that's because I haven't watched the show for a couple years so I'm out of touch. I definitely liked the matter-of-fact breastfeeding reference, and the way they did it seemed perfectly in tune for the characters.

I noticed that too, thought it was great.

I also noticed that her daughter had a bottle she was drinking from at 2 years old as well though.

EBM? Or maybe the daughter asked for a bottle to play with?

I liked that Grace mentioned she was breastfeeding but was really taken aback by the portion control comment. I know this is a comedy but we really don't need these shows further pertpetuating breastfeeding myths like small breasted women can't breastfeed or won't have enough milk. I would have rather they left that part out than made the comment.

There was a co-sleeping reference too.

I caught that too! Harry Connick said, "Someone peed in our bed last night!"

As for the bottle... well, it's not really Grace's daughter, it's a baby actress... so they gave her something to play with so she'd be quiet during the scene I suppose. I actually thought it had handles on the side, and looked a little more like one of those Nuby soft-spout cups?

I guess I do kind of agree on the 'portion control' comment... but at least Grace gets in her positive comment first. Baby steps.

I was going to post about this too, but it totally slipped my mind. I was so excited that they made a direct reference to breastfeeding, and dh thought it was cool too. I didn't really see anything weird about the "portion control" thing, just because Grace's breast size has always been a running joke on the show. But, now that y'all mention it, I guess I see how it could someone uneducated could be "led astray".

I thought the co-sleeping reference was great too. I'm sure Debra Messing was the one who wanted both of those things to be brought up during the show.

Debra Messing is a huge breastfeeding supporter. When Julia Roberts was pregnant and on the Oprah show, Debra had video-taped a message to Julia saying that it's all about the boob and just be glad she has two boobs for two babies.
