Anyone here know what happened in Finland?

A while back, the national Child Protecive Services in Finland (or something of the sort) recomended that cosmetic neo-natal circumcision be banned. Does anyone know how this ended?

Lara... Ksiven (spelling?) can tell you. She's Finnish and posts here frequently. I think it's still awaiting ratification... but, if she sees this, she will respond.

Well they are certainly progressive when it comes to Eurovision entrants...

C'mon, we have faithfully tried for 45 years!!!! We have had a saying that Finland will win Eurovision song contest when hell freezes. Well...I guess that has happened now?

The funny thing is that the band is just doing it for fun - like the keyboardist is Sibelius Academy trained music teacher - just like other weird finnish bands Apocalyptica( http://www.apocalyptica.com/home/ IRL playing in sinfony orchestra/teaching in Sibelius Academy)or Nightwish( http://www.nightwish.com/ former singer is operasinger), classically trained musicians having fun.

And Thank you United Kingdom for 12 points.

Lara! I sent you a private message this morning(my morning, remember I am in totally different timezone than North America), let me know if you didn't get it.

Thank you Kia, I got exactly the anwser I was looking for.

BTW, Lordi was excellent. Brethren of Klingons in Finnish Top Hats are too hilarious to say no to.

Oh, you're welcome!

Lordi were excellent!

Glad to hear it if the Child Protection Services really did advise it (circumcision, not Eurovision) being outlawed too.

Kia... it just shows that we Brits appreciate good music when we hear it!

I love Terry Wogan, by the way! But of course you won't have seen him. With a wonderful, dry sense of humour he treats the Eurovision Song Contest for what it is: the biggest live musical extravaganza on earth that tens of millions love to hate!

Did he not claim that Lordi's lead singer was a heavily disguised Roy Wood?

I also love the open and unabashed boredom he expresses at the tedium of the counting process, I like to imagine that a few decades ago he actually expressed some interest throughout but has gradually been worn down into his current cynical state via repetition.

I understand the difference between "cosmetic" and "religious", and i'm sure there's a few Jewish people who live in Finland, and they should have the rights to a Mohel, but what about people who go to a Mohel to circumcise even if they're not Jewish?

Hopefully this example won't become true.

I would think the Mohel would turn them away.

And who would go there? You have to understand that for Scandinavians circumcising a babyboy is as horrific as circumcising babygirl. It is absolutely beyond people's minds that a parent would do something like that to a child. You have to understand that circumcision here is concidered child abuse.

And - this is ofcourse just my personal opinion(that I know lot of Scandinavians share) - I wish and hope that my country would be a place where children's rights would be more important than adult's religious rights. I wish that ALL children would be protected against genital cutting and when they are 18 they could decide for themselves!

As far as I know there is no mohel's in Finland who live here permanently. I'm not sure though.hmm..must check this later on.

The letter I linked above was an answer to social & health ministry's inquiry 2003. The ministry asked from different organisation their opinions about circumcision after there had been some 'home circs' , refugee children circ'ed by some African 'doctor' and boys almost died.

All the other org. where adamantly against circumcision, yes, all the medical associations too, only ones pro-circ were ofcourse muslim&jewish communities. I should try to find more of those comments and translate them to english when I have time.

-----------------------------

Bleeping tabloids found a pic of mr. Lordi eventhough he asked them not to. So here he is; http://www.seiska.fi/

(the dark haired guy wearing classes on the cover of the magazine). Finns are absolutely furious, we didn't want to see real him - we love the monster.

Who was the British woman who said the points on TV, she looked so familiar.

Well, in the states mohels will circ non-jewish babies. Dunno if they are non-jewish mohels though. But I'd bet someone would do it. :

I believe that that was Fern Cotton...She just seemed like ubiquitous bubbly blond #3335775544 to me though.

Anyway, great here that Scandinavia has the right attitude to circumcision, sounds a lot like the one we have here in Britain. Unlike us though you never actually pracitised RIC, did you?

Nope. Never done here. Just like Russia and mainland Europe, circumcision has only practised by jews and muslims.

I always feel ashamed that our country did it. Even more so that by exporting our filthy lies we also are thus partially responsible for the current situation in America.

With regards to your Jews and Muslims though, have you any idea how many of them do it? Are alternatives like the Bris Shalom catching on at all?

Is Finland a Christian country? Many Christians here think that it's a religious requirement that boys be circumcised.

Despite the fact that St Paul said quite clearly that it was not neccessary and was in fact totally negligible?

Well, fair enough, he did say some questionable stuff about women but it quite clearly is not and I have no idea where they would get that impression from.

Even if it did I think it is unnacceptable, the child should get the choice over their own penis decided by their own religion, or lack thereof.

At least we head the list of three advanced countries that have practised RIC in the past and either no longer do so (UK) or have drastically reduced the numbers to a trickle (Canada & Australia).

Shows it CAN be done.
