Question about piercings and birth

I know that genital piercings have to be removed for birth, but will it be possible for it to be replaced afterwards? Will the holes be all stretched out of whack? How long after the birth can they be replaced? Do they contribute to tearing, or are they more likely to tear?

Wow, that's a lot of questions! I'm considering a piercing, but I'm also considering TTC #2 and I want to have all my ducks in a row before taking the plunge on a piercing I may not be able to keep.

Good question. Though I imagine any stretching shouldn't be a problem, maybe you could even go up a guage or two But seriously, I don't think it should be any big problem, just make sure to do good peri care after the birth, keep everything nice and clean you know so stuff doesn't stick to the jewlery or whatever. I would think you would be better off though going into it with a piercing that is already well healed, YK? If I was going to get the piercing I would do it ASAP so it has time to be plenty healed before any birth trauma. But someone more experienced in this might correct me, I don't have any piercing down below. I've seen moms birth who have had them but haven't followed up with them long term to see how everything ended up later.

After I saw your no circ siggy I was just laughing to myself (I'm anti-circ too and a NICU/L&D nurse to boot) and was thinking that you know the nurses are going to think you're all crazy for having genital piercings but these same nurses would be in favor of you totally mutilating your newborn baby's genetals just for the hell of it. This world is so insane!

I've not seen issues with clitoral hood piercings, but I can see a potential for problems with a fourchette piercing. Seems to me you would want to replace the jewelry as quickly as possible after all the swelling has abated, because the small microabrasions that happen with stretching could cause it to grow back together.

I need to subscribe to this...

My VCH is a year old this weekend (and I love it btw ) and my baby's due in September. Its 100% healed by now but I would also think that it needs to be replaced as soon as the swelling goes down and perhaps the gauge may need to be changed? I'll let you know the further along I get and will ask my MW/Doula further down the road.

*If* we end up with a hosp. birth, I doubt the L&D nurses would even notice as it would be out before we go. (we also don't tend to linger at the hospital too long after birth)
