Rose Marie N. was born yesterday May 24th at 8:18 pm. She weighed in at a whopping 9 lbs 6 oz and was 21 inches long. She is doing great, and we got home about 3 hours ago.
I started out planning a homebirth, but my temperature was a little high and baby's heartrate was between 170-190, and also baby was at a -3 station with a lot of amniotic fluid, so there was some scare of a possibility of cord prolapse. My wonderful midwife said we should go to the hospital, and I was very sad but we decided that would be in the best interest of both me and the baby to give birth there. I arrived at the hospital 8 cm dilated with my bag of waters intact, after a long and intense car ride there.
I'm not going to lie, labor with Rose was the most excruciating pain I've ever been in. Much more intense than when I was in labor with DD1. Somehow I managed to get through it and I had my natural childbirth, thanks to the help and support of my DH, my midwife, and the awesome and open-minded doctor & nurse who were with me the entire time. Rose presented posterior with her chin up, not tucked in, so she was extremely difficult to push out. I broke a blood vessle in my nose when I was pushing. The doctors and nurses at the hospital were great, and the doctor protected my perineum when she came out and I only needed 3 stitches. They also let her stay attached to the placenta until the cord stopped pulsating, and we even "snuck" the placenta out of the hospital (it's in my freezer now!). They didn't give her a bath, per my request, so she got to keep all that lovely vernex on her skin (if it wasn't for her size, I wouldn't have believed she was full term due to the huge amout of vernex she came out with). We got out of doing the eye drops and hepatitis B shot , so the only thing she got was the vitamin K shot. She stayed with us the entire time, and she was only out of our possession for a couple of minutes, but still in our room. Most of our hospital experience was positive, so I'm happy about that. I'm not happy about how often the nursing staff came in when we were trying to sleep, and I'm also not happy that they insisted on a glucose test because of her size. They wanted to do two more tests, but her level was 60 (anything over 40 is fine) so we refused further testing. They also wanted to get a blood draw from me but I refused. After talking to my MW, I realized I made the right decision there.
Sometime soon I'm going to sit down and type my entire birth story up, but for now I think I'm going to go to bed.
