Breastfeeding Issues

We're having some serious problems. I finally saw a lactation consultant last night because my nipples were bleeding and raw and scabbed. Turns out, Kirsten's tongue is not functioning properly. Rather pressing on the areola, it turns up and therefore doesn't get a good latch. The only milk she's getting is what I spontaneously let down at each feeding. Her tongue just doesn't move the way it's supposed to for effective nursing.

So now I'm doing this nurse 5 minutes - bottlefeed pumped milk - pump 10 minutes routine with her every two hours. I feel so sad about this. I've loved breastfeeding both of my children and am a huge advocate of breastfeeding and I'm just heartbroken that she can't do it. The lactation consultant suggested seeing a chiropractor to release anything that might be causing the abnormal tongue movement and also suggested something called a "posterior tongue tie" which is different somehow from a regular tongue tie and very few doctors know how to fix it.

This is just awful. My two older children are not at all happy with my time at the pump, etc. and I don't know how I'm going to manage it when my parents go back home next weekend. Plus I'm SO incredibly sad that she isn't able to nurse.

Just wanted to send . I hope there is something you might be able to do to solve it. Hopefully someone on the bf'ing board will have some good info for you! I would be ever so sad too if I was in your shoes, I really do hope there's a way to fix it!

I have never heard of this. I highly recommend breastfeeding.com community - there are TONS of super experienced nursing mommas over there.

I know how you feel. We have been having our fair share of problems too. If you can't get the problems resolved, i hope your older kids at least get used to your quality pump time. We have been using our pump time around here to read stories which seems to work well to alleviate the jealousy.

so sorry you are going through such a frustrating and difficult experience. you are providing the best you can for your child, even if she can't nurse directly from your breast.
i hope that you can find information and support to get you through this challenge.

My daughter had this problem and yes, it is VERY depressing. Kudos to you if you can find something that works. Savanah was losing too much weight too fast so I had to just stop trying and switch over to formula. Plus I was getting very depressed and frustrated too. Someone mentioned to me after the fact that there is this supplement system that connects right next to your nipple, so they will latch onto you and this tiny tube too and get the milk they need and still stimulate your milk too. Eventually they learn to nurse from you. I do not know what the equipment is called though.

hugs to you mama! I feel for you. My ds has a very high arch in the front of his mouth and not only does that create less suction, but it hurts like the dickens since he's basically rolling my nipple around trying to properly latch on. On top of that, we're working on a suspected case of the yeasties (YUCK) but I haven't given up yet. He eats like every 1.5 hours or so, just to stay full. He gets frustrated on the breast and doesn't create a lot of forced let-downs!

As for a pp's suggestion on the nipple stimulation gadget, I just saw something about that on the LLL website in their online catalog. It looks pretty cool actually. Check it out if you're not familiar with it!

Good luck to you and your little one.

My ds1 had very bad latch issues, so I had to fingerfeed him to retrain his suck. He started to nurse at 4 mos old and weaned at 22 mos.

The little gadget with the tube is called a Supplementary Nursing System, and might not work if it's a suck issue. Works great for a supply issue, though.

Today's big news: engorgement! Yaaaay! DD managed to bf exclusively until noon and even then only took 2/3 of her usual amount of formula for that feeding before popping off and falling asleep.

Great news! I'm so glad your DD is nursing better.

Kirsten hasn't had any pumped milk today yet at all ~ just milkies straight from the source . Still working on getting my supply up now that her latch is better.
