Would you take them to the doc.s???

Ok - I'm new to this homeopathic stuff. Don't laugh... but one year ago I would have just ran them to the Doc.s and come home scrips in hand. So I'm still building confidence in treating them at home... but wondering when I draw the line and they should get antibiotics.

DD#1 has had a mild, on-and-off fever for the last four days. Very cranky, rancid breath. No vomiting or diarrhea. Her face looked very swollen the first day. She *may* be getting a molar in. Yesterday she complained her ears hurt and cried about it for hours. This morning she woke up with pinkeye.

She's been getting Aconitum Napellus 30X two tablet since yesterday; she's had four doses. Ear complaints were more last night and this morning she said it doesn't hurt. Last night I put some willow/garlic oil drops in her ears. Should I do that this morning as well even though she says they don't hurt anymore? How long do I continue with then Aconitum Napellus? I've also been squeezing breast milk in her eye and using a warm compress to rid the gunk.

DD#2 just has pinkeye, since yesterday morning. I've been cleaning it and have but breastmilk in maybe eight times. It looks the same and isn't clearing up. One eye is much more swollen than the other. Would you keep on with the bm or swicth to the prescription drug? (which I happen to have, but I know it stings so I haven't wanted to use it.)

Baby is doing great!

Yep. I'd take them in. (And I don't run to the doc every second, either.)

I'd take them in, too. If nothing else, you'll at least understand what you're dealing with.

yep. with that many symptoms, especially in the oldest, you could be dealing with some sort of systemic bacteria that actually needs medical treatment. As for the pink eye, keep up the boob juice!

I would take them in too. I'm all for trying to take care of them naturally, but being a doctor, nope! Take them in so you know what you are really dealing with.

My daughter got sick with a potentially fatal heart problem last year and I almost waited too long to take her in to be treated within a certain time frame. It was something I could have never known was happening to her because all she did was run a high fever and was tired all the time. It's not good to gamble with a little ones life if they can't truly tell you what is wrong. I would never tell someone to rush to a doctor for just any little thing, but this sounds like it has gone on for a while.

Hi BE!

Well, I'm going to be the contrarian here, only because ... this bug has been going around. In my daughter's classroom, half the kids were out with the exact symptoms you've described, from pinkeye to fever that comes and goes (but esp shows up at night, right?) to horrible malaise that just makes you feel like total crap, followed with a heck of a runny nose and cough. My son had pinkeye for a week before it cleared up (no antibiotics, just let it be). My husband and daughter both had really bad chest pains with it too. We see a very cool family practice doc and she said to take homeopathic bryonia for muscle aches and fever.

Unfortunately, I think it's a variation on a late season flu. We've had symptoms in our house for three weeks now, my daughter is almost completely better though after three weeks...the rest of us still have runny noses.

So, I would say if you have a cool doc, you should go see them (I did, made me feel better), but don't get too worried about it.

BM is great with pink eye. As are eyebright compresses.

Personally, I wouldn't take them in. I have some suggestions but first I want to encourage you to find a holistic or herbal pediactric practitioner to consult with while you are learning. OR go to the health and healing forum and ask your questions there.

Trust your instincts ultimately!

Yes, I would add - our doc didn't give us anything antibiotic and said it was purely viral. The only things she recommended were homeopathics, rest, eucalyptus oil in showers/baths/humidifiers, and lots of fluids. (PM me if you want her name, if you don't mind driving into the city). Oh, and no tylenol except for comfort (i.e. if the kids can't sleep at night at all, are miserable trying to sleep, you've tried baths, etc.).

It's a whopper of an illness though, if you all have what we've had...

HMC - But you know what it's really from, right?

I make you hungry? I've been accused of worse, I suppose...

No, I don't. Do I get it subconsciously and not realize it?

There is a step in-between: Call and talk to the advice nurse.

Our son had a 4 day fever last week. I called the doctor twice -- once at 9:30 pm when he woke up crying "mom, my cheek is HOT",and I took his temp and it was 105.6 . They gave us some home things to do (strip him down, sponge bathe him, up his dose of tylenol) and it came down to 104.something in the time I was talking to the nurse and giving her the history. She said to check in with the doctor's the next day. We did, and their response was "yep, there's a 4 day fever going around. we've seen a lot fo this." Sure enough, he was fine the next day (though a bit tired).

From the reading that I've done, if the fever has gone on for 5 or more days, then you should go in. I've never taken my kids in at the first sign of fever, but if they've had a fever for several days, I do at least call.

I'm paranoid about eyes, so I go for the eye drops. But, I'd keep up the bm for a day or two more and see what happens.
