I think I get "unschooling" now!

My dd is 4 and I've been amazed at the stuff she is teaching herself and the questions she is asking. She is so curious and asks stuff I never even stop to think about. What kind of bird is that? What does it eat? What does it use to make a nest? Will it come back and re-use the nest? Will the Daddy bird help build the nest? Will he help feed the babies? On and on and on......

She is teaching herslef to read and write becasue she wants to write cards to her Nana. She asks me what everything spells...and how to spell things all day. I never even thought we would be doing this at this point! And as she learns the letters she is also going to a sign language book we have and looking up how to sign the letter. This is totally on her own- no prompting. I wouldn't even think of doing all this. I would think it's too much. But she's so happy and curious and makes it all look so easy.

I'm realizing that I don't really need to even figure out what to teach her and when becasue she already has this natural flow and this great wonder and curosity that is going to show us the way.

Now in the car yesterday and again today she started playing, "how can you make 5, 8, 2, 9, etc." She would hold up say all five fingers on one hand and say to me "see this is five" then she'd hold up 3 on one hand and 2 on the other and say, "look Mama, this is 5 too!!!" and count them as to prove it to me. She likes seeing how many different ways she can discover to make a number in this way. She is totally learning math!!! And she's discovering it herself!! I just don't think it would be the same if I was telling her it was time to learn numbers as if I was teaching her something she needs to know. The way it is now is like she's sharing her discovery with me!! So cute!

This is just so exciting. Unschooling rocks!

Yay!!! She's very smart and you are now relieved to find this out about her learning naturally What could be better?

And think of what would (or should I say "wouldn't") happen if you stepped in and taught her what you thought she should be learning!

I'm so glad there are others here who understand!

I'm still just utterly amazed....not just by what she can do but by how she is learning so much on her own and so easily and with so much joy. I just want to keep on providing her with the space to explore and discover like this!

I'm realizing how much my natural wonder was drained by school. I don't ever mean to offend anyone but this is my honest learning right now. I mean, I can see now that somewhere early on I came to believe that the teachers knew more than me and they knew what I needed to know and when. I studied for the grade. I tried to learn what I was supposed to be learning.
That's fine I guess but it wasn't very fun.
My dd's are so excited to learn right now it's just awsome to see!
I'm excited too as you all can tell!!!

Thanks for the support!

This is so true for me! I learned and studied just enough to get a grade I was happy with which depending on the class and how much I was interested in the subject varied quite a bit. PE, I hated and would have been happy with an F but I usually got a D or C to make my parents happy and keep them off my back. I refused to participate in the stupid games! Now strength training and and biology I liked so I got an A and worked to get an A but at the same time I didn't try to get a high A just an A. I don't want that kind of thinking for my girls I want them to learn things b/c they want to not because someone says that they should.
Glad you are loving it!
