Dec.05 DDC - 5 things you don't know about me - Page 2

omg! i want to do this but have so little time right now.

1. my mouth is horrible! another mom on here can attest to it. i just can't stop it! those words are like adjectives and adverbs to me!! lol! i try to apologize to others, but hey, its really hard. i do try to watch it in front of minors, but its so apart of me. i do agree that Michelle has it down as an art, though, as i can so see her cursing in her writings! i have to edit mine out at the end!

2. i was a political science major in college. wanted to become a journalist in a foreign country b/c i really couldnt stand this country's politics...and that was like 20 years ago!!

3. i got a master's degree in tax law after law school. i know most ppl think its boring.

4. i am very politically active (well, i was until E came along). i throw house parties, canvas, register ppl to vote, man the polls on election day, etc. i went through ped (post election depression) for months after the last election.

5. i ran for political office 2 years ago. long story...very politically prevented from being put on the ticket. very political.

a few more:

i love all things international (well, not jihadists). i think the rest of the world has so many great things that the USA has missed out on.

i HAVE to read at night. no exceptions. i cant fall asleep if i don't read. period.

i miss all the conveniences working gave me. i miss my housekeeper!!! im obsessive compulsive and love a clean house but i cant afford the housekeeper now and i really HATE doign her job!!!

i miss my nannies too! i dont miss being away from my kids but my nanny used to cook dinner for me too (i made a deal with her and she cooked for my family and her family, b/c she lived next door..i paid for all the food). i miss coming home to a good meal! lol!

I am bisexual but havent had a "experience" with another woman in over 6 years. its more of a mindset for me than about experiences, which i havent had many of.

ok, ill stop now. but this was fun!

Amanda,
My DH and I are sci-fi geeks too. DH has a program (!) that he got when he went to see the original Star Wars movie. Our current favorites are Farscape and Firefly, both series that were sadly cancelled.

Me too! I was having a conversation with my dad and I got the 'oh, you're still bi?' thing from him... it blew my mind because he's usually very progressive. Yeah, I'm still who I am, even after 10 years of monogamy and two kids

Well, just know that you aren't alone on this one. I'm obsessed with my husband's face especially.

Loving this thread so much! I love all of you and your lives so much! Here are a few more about me.

1. I'm socially outgoing especially in odd public places like the supermarket where I make friends with all the clerks and baggers (mostly beautiful human beings from Mexico right now!) - but can't stand superficiality or shallowness in my intimate friend or family relationships. This can be a real limiting factor where I live now, but I don't care, I'm a complex life-loving person. In the past I was repressed in general and wasn't able to talk about "things" but now can hardly remember that old way of being.
2. I love watching old British comedies but rarely do. They make me laugh until I cry.
3. I was never a baby person and now I'm super-mama incarnate (in my better moments).
4. I truly believe that everything around us has living energy and secret undiscovered-by-science qualities, and so I am a dedicated organic eating, home-cooking-every-night, avoid-the-bad-stuff freak.
5. I've been addicted to the Internet (once it came along) and computers since the dark ages of the 80s. However I'm a creative, not techie. Although I once wrote a published review of a well-known game, I've never been a gamer.

linda, i swear, the more you post, the more we sound the same. weird.

speaking of the internet, we're getting rid of ours starting next week for at least a month, maybe up to 3 or 4 months. dh and i are both addicted to it and we're cancelling internet and cable for the summer to spend more family time together rather than online. so sadly, i won't be around nearly as much starting next tuesday. i am NOT looking forward to this. tv i can live without, but the internet. ugh. i'm pissed at myself for saying yes to this idea.

You are all so very cool! I wish we lived locally so we could all hang out IRL!

Here's a few more about me:

1~I hate what the modern supermarket, even WFs and other HFSs, have done to the family farmer. For that reason, I try to buy everything I can direct from local small family farmers, including my beef, raw milk, eggs, chickens, lamb, and produce. What I can't get from them personally, I buy at our seasonal farmer's market, and beyond that, I try to do without. I rarely set foot in WFs.

2~I make my own butter, yogurt, diapers, and wool covers. For the winter, I lacto-ferment said veggies from above.

3~I'm a total throwback to the 1950s and a disservice to feminists everywhere - all I ever wanted to be is a wife and mother, and I find it every bit as fulfilling as I dreamed it would be when I was a little girl.

4~I'm a compulsive neat freak about the house. It's not something to brag about, it's really more of a disorder of mine. If everything isn't where it belongs, I can't function. My spices are alphabetized. The children's toys are sorted into buckets by type, with a picture of the toy that belongs in it on the bucket, so even pre-readers can know how to put them away. Laundry is hung on the line every morning, and put away by dinner. All the linens in my closet have to be folded exactly the same way, etc, etc

5~I have a brown thumb. I've never had a successful garden in my life, nevermind houseplant that survived more than a year in these trenches.

i think i'll be sneaking on every once in a while via my neighbor's connection. so it won't be the last of me, i promise!

wow jen, i'm impressed with your culniary resourcefullness. i hope to be there some day.
one more bit...

i'm completely jealous of Jen..

making your own butter?!?! wow... you amaze me! i hope someday to make it there!!

okay... a few more...

-- i've dyed my hair blue, purple, turquoise, crayon red, bleached, and green. not all at the same time mostly late high school/early college.

-- i was an ovo/lacto vegetarian for seven years... all through high school and then three years into college.

-- i did the above simply because i liked the reaction/attention.

-- i love not having cable. and partly for the reason listed above.

-- did i mention i'm quite a geek?
oh.. and andrea... i admire your attempt at giving up internet for the summer. cable? gosh, i don't care about that. i would give up *A LOT* of other things (um, showers, daily lattes, all vehicles, etc) before the internet : (yep... a geek )
this is too much fun!

I LOVE science fiction too. I am obsessed and a collector of Orson Scott Card. I just love his writings, although I hate his politics!

I bought a house mainly b/c it has a driveway that is about 300 ft. long (i dont really know how long it is b/c im a horrible judge of distance...but its long enough that we cant see the street and we have a bunch of woods in front, back and on the sides of the house so we cant see our neighbors, and I LIKE THAT! LOL!

I appear to be super confident and outgoing when ppl first meet me but im really quite shy and insecure inside...i just dont let that part show.

My 15 yo son and I do not get along very well. Its sad, but he is very independent and seems to find no value in anything i say. yes, it makes me very sad. he is my first born and the one that i have dedicated most of my life to.

My husband is a very selfish person and doesnt want me to stay home with the baby.

My ds2 has noonan's syndrome and had several surgeries in his 2nd year of life, including open heart surgery, so i know alot about heart surgery, since i couldn't trust the docs.

I was adopted b/c my parents were too immature to deal with me. I later learned my mother had 4 other children, the last 2 of which she kept with her. i guess the first 3 were "trials".

i love to whitewater kayak but don't do it anymore b/c dh cant even swim.

i love to hike and camp also. i spent 2 weeks in teh white mountains 2 years ago and climbed Mt. Washington (highest mt. in NH) and it was a very rewarding experience. I had a 70 lb. backpack on the whole time.

I am also a very strong person physically. DH never does anything around the house, so I have to do anythign that has to do with repairs, etc.

I love my DDDC!!!

since we are among friends, I am a huge Star Wars and Harry Potter geek.
I could recite the original trilogy from a to z. :

As a mom, i am finding an entirely new feminism that speaks to me that isolates me from many of my friends. my colleagues at ms. magazine ( i don't work there, though) don't see childbirth with midwives or breastfeeding as power ideals worth celebrating like I do. i am a SAHM mom who happens to still work PT from home and I feel like I am doing it all. if i didn't have to work, i'd be calling Jen about churning butter. You are my hero!!

i have never seen star wars...any of them...by choice...:

any wasabi fans amongst us? i had some wasabi tonight for dinner on my sauteed greens and realized i should add that to my food compulsions - wasabi, salsa and garlic. yummmmm!
ooh andrea, I love wasabi peas! (only wasabi I've had!)

i feel for you. i've been slowly weaning myself off of things. i left the one board that i was the MOST addicted to. seriously, crazy addicted. sickeningly addicted. i had to just do it cold turkey and haven't been there in a week. the first 2 days were so hard i thought i wouldn't make it. : but now it's not so bad. of course, i seem to have replaced it a bit with MDC. but i'm gonna stop that soon, too. next week i start a vigorous writing plan for my dissertation so i'll be using my time for that. anyway, sorry this became about me LOL! but i really feel for you. i'm gonna PM you with my phone number so that you can keep in touch if you need help/advice/someone to talk to during your time away from the internet. good luck!!!
jen - i'm the exact opposite in terms of neat freakishness. i'm a slobaholic. LOL well no...wait. i don't WANT to be messy, i just am. : BUT - a friend of mine from the other board i mentioned suggested that toy storage system to me and i've been using it. i LOVE it! all of my damn stickers fell off of course (because i'm the one for whom crap like that happens ALL THE TIME) but i still keep things mostly organized. usually. and rowan knows where everything is and can get it himself, which is SO nice. YAY ME!!!

and i'm also very impressed with everything you've mentioned. i'd love to live like that, i think. i say "i think" because i'm probably more mainstream that most of the people at MDC with the "modern conveniences" i enjoy in life. my parenting philosophy is not at all mainstream, but i think my lifestyle is.

A few things about me:

1. I am a terrible housewife and especially hate cooking. Because of that, I'm a little nervous about having to prepare food for my little guy as he's nearing the solids stage .

2. I have 3 university degrees, including a Master's in Environmental Studies, but have no idea what I'm going to do when I go off maternity leave. I hate the thought of going back to being a substitute teacher, which is what I did before. I also hate being 30-something and not having a real job prospect!

3. I wish I could sew and make my own clothes and stuff, but have never learned how.

4. I hate flying because I get really air-sick. That limits my travelling, though I love to be in Europe and wish I could see more of the world. I was born in Hungary and want to go back to visit more than I do.

5. I've always wanted to live on a farm in the country but don't like to feel isolated from others. I love the idea of having my own chickens and organic garden, but wonder if I'd be up to the daily work of it all.

Several more things:
~ we don't own a TV
~ I'm a Buddhist
~ I too love this DDC and learning from all the other wonderful mamas here .
i've been trying TV free for over a couple months now, off and on. i go in spurts of being totally great and fine with absolutely NO TV and then i seem to lose my mind a bit after about 2 weeks. and i have a few days of several hours of TV. and then i go back to no TV (or VERY little, like 30min/day). i'm someone who doesn't like silence, though (good thing i have a toddler LOL) so on my no-TV days i'm often blasting music. LOL!!
