I can't find that book - is the title right? what do the instructions say? Need more info to help....

I can tell you I just knitted a merman doll for DS and I attached the hair using a "hooked rug" method and a crochet hook...it's working great.

Toymaking with Children by Freya Jaffke

It says:

"Stitch along the entire neck up to the forehead. Take a stitch, leave end free, then insert the needle again into the same stitch. Pull through and cut in desired length. Repeat all along the neck."

I keep trying what I think they mean but it's not making any sense. :

HUH? Ok - no idea what that means, but try this:
take a length of yarn - 8 inches or so. fold it in half. Insert a crochet hook into a stitch where the mane should be. Hook the folded yarn with your crochet hook (if the folded yarn makes a "U", hook the crochet hook at the bottom of the U) Pull your folded piece of yarn through (like a hook rug, yk?....) Now you should have a U shaped piece of yarn lying under one of your donkey stitches. Now pull the ends of the U through the loop, thereby making it "knotted" on the stitch). you can do that wherever you want the mane to be - when you're done, just trim the yarn so the mane is as long or short as you like it.

aha! thanks! I'll have to go buy a crochet hook first though...
