Eustachian dysfunction & allergies

Just took dd in to see our alternatively-minded MD because dd has complained daily of plugged ears (no pain) randomly throughout the day for months. He says she has eustachian dysfunction in her left ear, (not an infection) which she will outgrow by the time she is 6 & nothing to worry about. She does have allergies though, as both my dh & myself do - hayfever definitely is the culprit for dh & I, but the MD thinks it's our cat in dd's case. I don't know why, she doesn't react directly to being with our cat, even when scratched. (my brother is highly allergic to cats & wheezes & his skin swells up if scratched). Our cat is in failing health at age 17, I can't see giving her up at this point without knowing for sure if this is cat allergies. MD recommended things we have been doing already - HEPA filter, nettles, quercetin, gingko, fish oil, etc. But this has been a very bad season for hayfever, we live in Northern CA where we had late rain for 60+ days straight, more than Seattle gets in a year. My hayfever is awful, as is dh's. Dd's allergies are worse now too. I just am doubtful if my cat is a major problem, if at all. Last year, a study came out actually claiming that exposure to animals from birth prevents allergic reactions to them. (which is why often kids raised on farms have no animal allergies).. so the more cats you own, the better for your baby. Anyway what should I do?, should I put dd through allergy testing? Are allergy shots safe as far as mercury content, etc? I am leaning towards NAET, but my mother had no luck with that & wasted lots of $$. :

My seasonal allergies have greatly improved since eliminating dairy from my diet. I am not allergic to dairy, but it increases mucous and I have a sneeze from time to time, nothing like I used to suffer. Allergies are kind of like layers, and at times a few layers need to be eliminated.

I don't have any homeopathic or natural advice, but we had a totally indoor cat from the time DD was born until she was around 6 years old (it died, we didn't get rid of it or anything), and she is definitely allergic to cats--quite allergic, as a matter of fact. I never thought she was, but I had her allergy tested last year and that was one of the serums she reacted to. The allergy testing wasn't bad at all--they used Emla cream to numb her back before they did it, I was in the room with her the whole time, and she said she barely felt anything. And she wasn't itchy or miserable or anything afterward. She's also allergic to feathers (got rid of the down comforter) and ash trees (we really watch her when the ash trees first bud and grow leaves--she can't avoid them, they are everywhere here). The testing was very useful even if we didn't treat her allergies, just knowing what she is allergic to has helped us to help her avoid those things.

She also has ear problems as a result of her allergies, but unfortunately she hasn't grown out of them. We are also investigating allergy shots and haven't made a decision yet. Right now as long as she takes her Zyrtec and Singulair, she is fine. If she skips a few days, she gets an ear infection.

My dh & I have eliminated most dairy - dh all, me most - I'm 20 weeks pregnant, so I haven't given it all up for calcium's sake. I have calcium supplements I could take instead. Dd loves raw milk, actually due to her teeth looking a bit weak lately, we just started her on it again a few days ago. Up until then, her only dairy was yogurt sporadically.

What is raw milk- is that what I've seen labeled as colostrum at the health food stores? How is it that DD can drink raw milk but not other milk? Is it the pasteurization? Is raw milk more prone to contamination or spoilage? I am curious as I have considering trying some.

I'm glad you asked - as I re-read my post, I just realized that dd is no longer complaining about her ear! She has continued with the raw milk. Allergy season is not over, I'm still sneezing sometimes, but I'm also drinking the raw milk & I notice my sinuses clear immediately after drinking it. Raw dairy is simply unpastuerized milk, which retains all it's nutrients, like human breast milk. I nursed my dd until last summer - she had no allergies until she weaned, so this makes sense. We buy our milk from Whole Foods here in CA - from Organic Pastures, they are an excellent dairy - for info their site is: http://www.organicpastures.com. Also see http://www.westonaprice.org/ for complete info on raw milk and the Nourishing Traditions diet. As far as contamination - those questions are answered on the websites - we keep our fridge at the suggested 36 degrees, which makes a big difference in shelf life. (about 5 to 7 days, but we finish it sooner anyway). Organic Pastures tests their milk from each individula cow right in the pasture for listeria, etc. They have never had any contamination, even when they tried to introduce listeria to the milk, it didn't take. You must find a trustworthy dairy source - you can order from OP online - they mail it frozen. Still, some people are very sensitive to lactose, but may be able to drink the raw milk as yogurt.

My ears also are constantly congested/ popping. I will have to give raw milk a try. BTW, the Westona link in particular is full of useful info, thanks.
