OMG I have never

had such a negative comment directed to my child as I did today. My oldest dd had to have some teeth pulled at the dentist office today. The dental assistant asked me dd if she was out for the day. We took this to mean out of school for the day due to her appointment. My dd said that she was homeschooled because there really wasn't an answer. The woman had the nerve to tell my dd "oh well, your out everyday, that is CHEATING!!" CHEATING WHAT????? Then she was talking about her ds in HS that had to read a book about Muslims and looked for my reaction. I was waiting for her to explain. She got all defensive then and told me that it was a story about an arranged marriage to the man's cousin. It was all I could do not to laugh at the woman.

I just sat and finished reading "The War Within" a young adult fiction novel about a Jewish girl during the Civil War.

Had the dental assistant been breathing in ether or something? I really just don't have any idea what she thought her point was?

Maybe she thought you were homeschooling bc you are fundamentalist or something? Very very weird.

Umm, err

Most schools are out this time of year anyway..
I mean I know some go year round and some go into June.
But this is graduation and "get out for summer season"
Good grief!

I was thinking the same thing. That school was out. I know the little town close by where my sister teaches isn't out until June 2nd. I just thought it was weird. She was also making comments about the number of children I have.

Maybe you should talk to the dentist. He/She may not be aware of how offensive the assistant is. I cannot see her point, either.....

Schools don't get out here until the end of June since they don't start until after Labor Day.

But regardless, that was really rude. I think I'd have to let the dentist over that dental assistant know what was said both about homeschooling and the number of kids you have.

You were there, so you would certainly know better than I, but when I read the sentence of what she said,
Quote:
"oh well, you're out everyday, that is CHEATING!!"
it struck me as an attempt at friendly humor. Is it possible she just meant it that way, rather than as an offense? You know, sort of that jokey way that some adults try to relate to kids? Was she smiling when she said it?

you have seven right?

she would faint if she met my cousin
she has fourteen heh heh

that was uncalled for and she even tried to start an arguement to boot. I hope you told her boss or another higher up about this.

Maybe it just made the assistant nervous? Like she brought up what her ds was reading b/c she??? I don't know. Just grasping at straws here.

Did you laugh at her idiocy?? I'd have giggled and said, "Oh yeah. When my kids have a teacher ratio of 1:1, (or whatever you've got - surely less than most schools!!) they really get off easy.

I'd also have replied that my kids finished their study of Islam a few years ago. Too bad HER kids had to wait until high school. :

I don't know what I'd say to the dentist. "Your assisant is a moron," sounds a little judgmental but what are the odds she will meet another homeschooler and say something so stupid? Seriously, after the fact are you just going to look crazily oversensitive or will her boss unders\stand?

: Sounds like the kind of stupid joke some people would make.
