stuff to bring to the hospital question.

ok, ive been packing my bag for the hospital and i have everything on the list that the hospital gave me except for "two nursing bras." everyone (my mother, friends who have had babies, etc) told me to wait on that, because its hard to tell what size you will need until your milk comes in... maybe im missing something here, but why do i need bras for the hospital? im just going to be hanging out in the hospital bed until they let me go home, right? so why do i need a bra, i dont wear one to bed at home... lol, i only really wear one when i leave the house. sorry if this is a stupid question, im new to all of this. just wanted to make sure that i dont have to run out and buy some bras right away!

thanks .

If your milk comes in while you're still in the hospital, you may need the bras to wear to hold the nursing pads on or you'll be changing your shirt every time you let down

well that makes sense! so maybe i should just buy a cheapo bra just in case, and then go buy some properly fitted ones after the baby is born. my mother told me it took a couple of days for her milk to come in, and the hospital that we are going to only keeps us for 24-48 hours so i wasnt sure. thank you!

off to read the nursing bra threads. lol, on a slightly related note, i went into victoria's secret the other day to buy underpants and the salesgirl kept following me around trying to sell me frilly bras. finally i told her "listen, im 8 months pregnant and last time i checked this store doesnt carry much in the way of D cups, or nursing bras." she looked down at my belly, blushed, and suggested a sports bra, of all things. lol.

I used a cheap almost-sports bra in the hospital and I actually really liked having my nursing tank shirt from Target (they run REALLY small, size up... several sizes). My milk didn't come in until the 6th day... so I didn't really "need" the bras in the hospital for the reason I mentioned, but I liked wearing the tank since I was having so many visitors. Also, I ended up spending 5 days in the hospital post-birth because of an unexpected c-section, so you just never know.

I just bought this bra a couple of days ago. It's very comfortable and has a bit of room to grow.

I love my Bravado original nursing bra. They aren't very expensive and you can buy them online. They're really comfy and have lots of extra room. Most nursing bras are quite adjustable because your breasts change so much in size.

Actually, I like sports bras for nursing. It's easiest if they're a little bigger in the band than I'd normally get, and then they lift up and down from the bottom. I like not having to fiddle with flaps. Of course, I'm not hugely endowed, and I'm not extremely prone to plugged ducts/mastitis. Either of those would make the sports bra option a lot less workable.

I had some nursing bras with dd, but mostly I just wore sports bras. They were more comfortable and easy to just lift up with my shirt. I just bought one of these:

And its really quite cozy, its snug but stretchy, so I figure it will expand well with engorgement.

wow, i had no idea that sports bras could work... i never liked them because they make me look like i have a gigantic uni-boob, and i am quite fond of my cleavage . either way, victoria's secret definately does not carry anything in my size now. but if a sports bra works, i might give it a try... i can put my vanities aside for the sake of my baby and the comfort of my boobs.

thanks for all the tips, ladies. like i said, im new to all of this and i could use all of the help i can get.

I had forgotten about the nursing tanks at Target!! Thanks for jogging my memory. Im gonna have to go get some of them...and I second the sports bra "uniboob" thing. I hated it!! But I really liked the tanks!

another vote for sportsbras, and those little cami-bras and shelf-tanks that target has, too...way easy to pull down to "whip it out" without messing with snaps or clips. I did buy a couple "nice" nursing bras to wear out and about, but for home, it was sports bras, camis, and tanks ALL the way!

walmart has a pretty good selection too! targets good also but they dont carry tank style arround me. Glamourmom.com has great tanks for nursing pretty coulors too...

Oh, and forgot to mention I'm totally into Expressiva.com for really hip nursing shirts! That's sort of OT, though...

another idea for the hospital bag -- do you like hard candy? When I was in labor with DS 1 I LOVED watermelon jolly ranchers. They're a good distraction during contrax, too. Also, this time around I packed like two giant bottles of water just to remind myself to stay hydrated. I easily forget to drink water.

I absolutely *LIVE* in my Jane's bras. Soooo comfy. I sleep in them too.

Even though you think you won't be wearing a bra when you are at home... you might be surprised. They are nice to keep the nursing pads in place to help with leaking. I love my Lana wool pads, never had another clogged duct since using them for 4 years.
