Books about music for a three year old

Hiya! My son is in preschool part time and they have some great curriculum. Okay, but I am also responding to what he asks for when we go to the library and doing some stuff with him at home. So I think this goes in this forum; anyway you are the folks who might know the answer to this question.

I want some picture books about music. I am particularly interested in:

* books on how musical instruments work
* books about jazz
* books about classical music and orchestras
* biographies of famous musicians for young children

My son is really interested in listening to recorded music and likes live music.

He's three but he can enjoy books that are a bit above his level if they are interesting, so don't hold back. He's not that interested in unillustrated texts, but has attention span for books with short chapters, such as are typically used with children in grades 1-3. (Anyway I want pictures, because I want to build associations between what we read in books and what we see IRL.)

I know I can look these up using the catalog at the public library, but I would love to get your recommendations. I'm frustrated that I can't explain how an accordion works!

Thanks!

It's not a book but there are some cool albums out there that introduce the different instruments to children. The one I have is on vinyl. My boys love listening to the different instruments! It tells the name of the instrument, a little about it and the range of music it is capable of. Unfortunately, when we moved it got put in storage and I can't find it!

Yes, I remember an album like this. I wonder if anyone has the actual title, so that I could get it? Though books would be great, because my son likes me to read with him so much.

Mysterious Thelonious by Chris Raschka
A small picture book about Thelonious Monk. The text is written like musical notes, and the illustrations are colorful and animated. Very cool, and perfect for young kiddos.

Oh, and in case websites would be helpful, here's an online film (kinda dry, but...) about how pianos are made.

Harry Partch's Instruments
Harry Partch has created dozens of instruments. At this site "you can play the Partch instruments, listen to Partch explain each instrument, and hear musical examples."

Music from The Rudiments Of Wisdom Encyclopaedia by Tim Hunkin
A collection of thousands of strange, categorized facts in cartoon form. Amazing! In this section, you'll find cartoons on instruments, sound, and music in general. Lots of fun.

San Francisco Symphony Kids
Explore the instruments, learn about music, and make your own tunes!

HTH!!

I really like the "Classical Kids" collection of CD/audiobooks. You can find them on Amazon and I'm sure your library has them too.

My husband plays the harp so we get some catalogs for that. I know that the Sylvia Woods Harp Center has a bunch of books made for kids who are really little all the way through to adult to learn music. There are the usual flash cards, but they also have books that introduce basic concepts in a really fun way. I don't know if they still carry it, but there was one that followed the adverntures of Mr. Bass and Mrs.Treble Clef. LOL!. You should be able to find her catalog online to browse through what she carries. They even have harps for 5 year olds, but they're expensive for a kid to my way of thinking.

"Charlie Parker Played Be Bop (by Chris Rashka)" is a great one to get the feeling of jazz. And maybe something like Symphony of the Animals or Peter and the Wolf would be good? Oh, and Choo Choo Bugaloo (Buckwheat Zydeco) is a great CD that has a section on all the instruments - my kids have learned to identify lots of different sounds from that one. It also touches on a number of different genres.

Hi!
Michaelolaf.com has a catalog you can order - they have composer's biographies, instrument cards, and child sized instruments. They have a "Famous Children" series that tells stories about the composers when they were little. The books are by Ann Rachlin.
Musicforlittlepeople.com has child sized instruments.
I love the book "What a wonderful World" (Louis Armstrong)
