Can you redo elastic in fitteds?

I have some fitteds where the elastic is shot in the legs redering the diaper worthless against blowouts or sometimes even pee. Is there any way to redo the elastic? I do not own a serger and barely know how to use my dinosaur of a sewing machine (It is OLD! and it only does a straight stitch). Any ideas? Any way to fix it by hand or would it even be worth the trouble? Thanks!

Honestly, it would be tough. My friend used diapers with shot elastic as contours or cuts out the soakers to use in pocket diapers, if you want to keep using them.

Well, I saw how to repair shot elastic on this one page and it looked pretty easy. If you want to check it out:

It'd be tough wiht just a straight stitch. If you had a zigzag you could simply do a 3 step zigzag of swimwear elastic on the outside of the fitted (or inside if you prefer). The diaper would still be useful, but not too attractive.

That tutorial uses a straight stitch to apply the elastic... as long as you stretch the elastic well while stitching it shouldn't be a problem.

I did it! Thanks mommas for all the help! It was somewhat of a pain being that I am sewing-impaired but somewhat fun too. I'll post pics later on when I can find them (I am computer impaired too!)
