Smelly felted wool?

I have felted wool before but I've never had this happen. I went to take it out of the washer and it stunk. It's been stored in my attic for a while. All I can think of is everytime my baby pees I'm going to smell this. Anyone know a way to make it smell better? I just put it in for a second round.
thanks

Maybe lay it out in the sun for a while?

Were you over at my house today? I just felted some sweaters today and a couple of them had been stored for a couple of years in a rubbermaid box...anyway, woof! They smelled awful! I went ahead and dried them and they smelled a little better--I might try to wash them again with some baking soda? I'm just worried that if I wash them on hot again they'll get too felted? Is that possible? It's been a couple of years since I made a wool cover.

Hope the 2nd run through did the trick for your sweaters!

I ran them again on hot and only the one piece seemed to get more felted. The smell is still there but not when I dried it. I'm going to try the sun, when it stops raining. I'm hoping over time it will improve. I've gotta get covers made, I'm due in two weeks.

Do they smell like a barn? I had some wool like that. I stripped out the lanolin with Dawn, then relanolized with lansinoh.

Maybe some TTO in the rinse would help too. Good luck!

I had one that did that, it smelled like MOTH BALLS, but only after it was washed! I washed it again, and I could still smell it, but not as bad as before. I figured that it wouldn't ever be completely saturated again unless it was being washed, so the stink wouldn't be THAT bad... It was generally okay, too. There were only a couple of really heavy wetting night times that it was too noticeable.

I have yet to felt the wool fabric that I have for making covers...but in the past when I have cold-washed and air-dried wool sweaters of my own, they always have a distinct smell when they are wet. I hate that smell. I hadn't even thought about a wool cover smelling like that when wet...hopefully felting and lanolizing it will take care of the problem. I haven't ever read of people having this problem with wool diaper covers, so it must not smell the same way.

When I felted my wool I used Suave shampoo and that's exactly what it smelled like when I took it out of the dryer too. Since wool is hair my guess is that you need to wash on hot with a shampoo to get the smell out (not cover it up, but to wash the hair of wool). Hope you get it out!
