Easy/Inexpensive Snaps?

For the first few diapers that I have made, I have used aplix because it is easy and inexpensive...but I like the idea of using snaps to make a few covers for my fitteds. I don't think I want to invest in a snap press, so I was wondering...is there any way to do plastic snaps without the giant snap press?

Also, does anyone use metal snaps on diapers? Are there drawbacks to using metal?

If you have a drill press (or can find one cheap, even if it doesn't work anymore), you can use that. That's what I use (all I purchased were the set-in dies (vs. the screw in ones) and walah!

You can use the snap tool (where you use the long-prong metal snaps) too I think, but of course the best is the plastic resin, and in the long run they are cheaper.

I don't use Aplix, I'm a purely snap girl - not that I don't like it, but I don't like it as much and I can't make mine look nice... and I don't like that it snags, sticks to everything... AND, my FIL has a drill press so that made it easy.

I know I'm a minority, but I love Aplix fitted diapers - you get a better fit IMO. I do, however, prefer snaps on the covers. I have used metal snaps on both fleece and wool covers with great success. I bought a snap setter tool from www.snapsource.com for $9 plus some snaps. Much cheaper than going the snap press route. Now, if you are making lots of diapers, you might be better off with the press since the plastic snaps are much cheaper. One other note - if you go with the snap source metal snaps, stick with the size16. They have size 20 - you have to buy an additional adapter for $3.25. The stud, socket, and bottom prongs are still a size 16 - the only thing that changes is that the cap is a size 20. There's also a better selection of snaps in the size 16.

I have the snap source, haven't used it yet, but will be soon. As soon as I find the perfect wrap pattern! I wouldn't recommed it if you are planning on sell diapers. The snaps are on the pricey side considering each cover uses around 8 snaps. That being said if you have a friend close to you that makes diapers or just want to purchase in bulk you can get 600 snaps sets for about $60 that would include shipping if I remember right. I have a friend that is going to split it with me so that will be alot cheaper. 300 snaps for me will go along way Hope that helps.

I had to go to HomeDepot.com to figure out what a drill press is. I know we don't have one, and, unfortunately, I don't know if any of our friends/family have one. My guess is they don't, since I don't know of any of them being super handy with tools. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I may try this out since I am just making diapers for my kids and not selling them. I'm glad to hear that metal on wool works out well, since putting snaps onto wool covers is my first goal. I like the aplix on the fitted diapers, too; I've just heard others mention that if you have an aplix fitted and an aplix cover, it gets too bulky in the front. Hopefully an aplix fitted with a side snap cover will prevent that. I'm also going to try a recycled wool sweater soaker so that I don't have to deal with snaps/aplix at all on that one.

you can also do aplix front dipe or cover and aplix side on the other. that reduces the bulkyness.

That is such a great tip! I was so inspired I immediately ordered the dies and can't wait for their arrival. My husband is a woodworker, so a drill press is easily accessible. He kind of chuckled when I told him what I'd be using it for, but said it made perfect sense.

Thanks!
