i do not know what i did wrong but EVERYTHING has wilted and died....oh well. I am thinking of going to farmers market and buying up a bunch of stuff and canning/freezng it. is this a good idea for a first-timer?

HI - Could you decribe a little more about what happened? Maybe the posters here can help come up with some solutions.

At the farmers market you can ask if they have 'seconds" or whatever. I've been able to buy large bushels of tomatoes and such much cheaper because they have a few blemishes. If you plan to can or freeze appearance won't matter and the farmers may be quite happy to have someone to purchase those veggies.

I am so sorry, if it makes you feel better my primroses look awful.

I agree...give us more info. The only thing that I can see killing off an entire garden is heat and no water. Plus, it's not too late to start planting again after you fix the old problem. Big starts/transplants are a great option for this time of year, although expensive. Tell us more.

Your post made me Because I have killed a huge number of things this year and was coming here to lurk for ideas! Personally I had peas die and sugar snap peas- they were really sad- they got really tall- like 5 feet then died from the bottom up. It also looks like something is eating the blossoms off my squash plant, so no squash for me this year. The only thing doing good is the tomatoes.

What did you kill?

Ug, that is what stops me from trying. I have these beds in the back of our house that are just empty dirt. I'm sorry.

OTM, did it get too hot for the peas?

M2JG, all I can say is that I've never had this much trouble. I'll bet it's regional thing. If you live in an area where lots of stuff grows you should totally try. Just stick some zuccini, tomato, squash, onions or whatever out there and see. If you start from seeds, you don't even have any significant costs.

As far as pests, yea, that sucks. That and gophers.

Maybe you ought to get a soil test.

I agree with IdentityCrisisMama about not enough water--but it's pure speculation until we know more! Definitely not too late to try again, and will be so worth it to you.

Mmmmm...yummy fresh produce.
