Ugh...

I think we have thrush.: I've never had it before, so I'm not sure, but my nipples hurt, and I just finished a 7 day treatment for a vaginal yeast infection a couple days ago, and I feel like it's coming back. What do I take for thrush? What works??

Rinse your nipples in vinegar after baby feeds... ask your midwife or doc about the rest. You've gotta' be vigilent! Best wishes!

I have it as well. We're doing:
*14 days of Diflucan for me
*14 days of Nystatin for baby (though I hear it doesn't work very well)
*Complete sugar elimination diet: no sugars, fruit, gluten (wheat or flour products), or dairy (except for plain organic yogurt); I'm pretty much eating just brown rice, lentils, spinach, broccoli, kale, eggs, nuts (no peanuts), seeds, and plain yogurt. Yum.
*Acidopholus for mama and baby
*Rinsing nipples in water after each nursing and applying GSE solution (1 oz. DISTILLED water with 10 drops grapefruit seed extract); applying solution every hour thereafter until baby wakes to nurse
*Swabbing baby's mouth with GSE solution before nursing
*Washing all baby cloths, burp cloths, shirts, breast pads, sheets, towels, etc. in hot water
*Mom topless at all times at home, so nipples are dry and exposed to air

With all that, things seem to be better, but definitely not gone. This bugger is tenacious.

A couple other thoughts - how is your baby's mouth? Does she have a white tongue or white patches in her mouth? Is she gassier than usual? Are you? Are you craving sweets? These are also symptoms of thrush.

It is important to treat yourself & baby simulateneously to eradicate it. Genetian Violet is also effective, as is Candex (an all natural enzyme treatment you can find at your HFS). If you want to go the prescription route, Diflucan works very well if both of you take it.

The kellysmom website has some good articles. (www.kellysmom.com I believe).

With me, whenever my resistance gets down (if I am stressed, sick, overtired) I develop thrush. I have found that taking a maintenance dose of Candex helps me stay thrush free.

Good luck.
