Starting late - what veggies can I still plant?

Hi all! We *just* moved from an apartment to a house with a big sunny backyard! I've never really grown anything before and was wondering what I can plant this late in the game? I've already got herbs in containers and I have some strawberries waiting to be put in, what veggies can i still do? Is there anything I can start from seed?

Any info will be appreciated! Thanks!

Depends on where you are...if you live in a zone with a longer growing season, there will be more things you can start now. But really it's not that late. The main thing is to check the seed packet for the recommended planting time, the days to germination, and the average # of days to harvest. Some things definitely do better from seed; others you should go ahead and get small plants--tomatoes, for example.

You are not starting to late at all for zone 8! Some of the cooler weather things like peas may be out but there is still lots you can do. You can always put in starts if you are worried about the length of season. I would for sure do that with any tomatoes or peppers. Cucumbers, Beans, Squash and those types you could go either way. Carrots you could still do by seed. I am still planting some of these as the slugs keep chomping everything, so I have to replant. Good luck and enjoy!

Slugs and other plant eating creatures can't get to things in pots can they? Can anything be grown in pots, do some do better than others?
