Do I need to plant again??

I've sown tomato and pepper plants to transfer to pots. Do I need to plant a few more to ensure that I get veggies throughout the summer or will they produce more as I pick them??

In my previous gardens (done with no real knowledge of gardening, just crossing my fingers and hoping for the best) All my veggies would come at once then there would be no more. I need one tomato once a week for a couple months, not 20 all at once!

So, I planted the toms and peps about 3 weeks ago, should I start sowing some more??

And will there be problems with having planted them so late or will they just take longer 'til I get fruit off them??

Thanks a bunch!

It depends on what kind they are. Determinate tomato varieties will produce all at once. Indeterminate tomato varieties will continue to produce throughout the season, though they'll start to slow down eventually and would definitely be killed off by a couple of frosts.

Around here, if I take care of my indeterminates, I'm still getting a few tomatos around Christmastime. The flavor is different--more intense?--because it takes them longer to ripen.

Are you planting from seed or using starter plants? If you decide to plant more now, definitely I'd use plants, as it will give you a headstart. And you should also check the maturation time for the variety--tomatoes will start to bear anywhere from 50 to 80 days after germination, depending. The cold season tomatoes (50 days) were developed for northern climates; we get them here for late summer/autumn planting.

If you were to grow lettuce or other greens, successive plantings would definitely be the way to go.

Hope this helps!

Helps tons, I'll look to see if i can find what kind they are. I know they are heritage seeds if that makes a dif?? And I did grow them from seeds, they're still only like an inch tall:

wow, i didn't know that determinate and indeterminate stuff... we do successions with some of our things (carrots, beets, spinach, etc) but with peppers and tomatoes we plant them all at once and once they produce fruits, we enjoy them throughout our growing season... it would be hard for us to plant successions of them because our growing season is only a few months.

we grow a variety of sweet/hot peppers and heirloom tomatoes.
