New Here

Hi,

I am new here and expecting #2 in December. I decided to use cloth diapers on this one and am in the process of collecting all of my materials to start making nb sizes.

I decided on using the Chloe Toes pattern and I am going to make a combination of AIO pocket and fitted pocket diapers. My question is on the snaps.

I was thinking about purchasing the Snap Press...but it is so expensive Im not quite sure about it. I found the snap setter and it seems like a much cheaper alternative for me...since I am only making diapers for personal not for sale.

I have some questions on the snap setter and was wondering if anyone could answer....

Is anyone currently using the snap setter on AIO or fitted diapers?
- If so, is it pretty easy to put on the snaps?
- are there any issues with the metal snaps in the dryer with the AIO?
- do you experience any wicking because it has multiple prongs that it insets with....opposed to the plastic with just one prong.

Thanks so much,
Alicia

Welcome Alicia, and congrats!

Sorry I can't help you with the snap setter questions. I splurged and bought a snap press even when I was just making dipes for my DS. I thought it was worth it, even before I opened my business - it was easy to use and made really professional-looking dipes.

You could also consider using aplix or touchtape, unless you don't like them. They're easy to sew on and cheaper than snaps.

Hi..questions about washing

Hi,

I actually thought about it more and took the leap and bought a snap press this morning :-) I think it will be a good investment, since I plan on making all of #2 dipes. I am excited to get it and start making some practice diapes and then start making the "real thing". I am trying to cut my costs abit with the fabric and have read several posts saying they liked the Joann's microfleece so I think I am going to start out with that and suedcloth for the inners (although currently the suedcloth is not really available in baby colors). Then Ill do PUL for outer layer of my AIO pockets.

Im so excited about making them :-)

Questions about washing, #2 is going to be born in Dec...so dont really think I can hang dry unless I want dipe popsicles :-) Do most people just put them in the dryer? Does PUL hold up okay in the dryer? Also for cleaning I am going to bf, I read that you dont need to rinse the diapers out...if you dont rinse them...wont they stain? I remember with #1 I had to clean up her clothes right away after a blowout because her clothes would stain and I could never get it out.... And can you just use a "baby deterginent" or do you use something special?

Thanks so much for your help

Unless you do quick dry soakers you can expect a long dry time. I have a couple fitteds that have an internal saoker and even after 2 drying cycles in the dryer that still feel damp So a waste of electric. If you can do a quick dry soaker they will dry in no time. As far as pul in the dryer I don't know b/c I don't use pul I have read that it will last longer not being put in the dryer. Maybe you could set up a drying rack near your laundry area and blow a fan or near a heater vent to help the drying along. I have a line hung in my basement with a dehumidafier near it, and a retractable in me bath tub area for airing out dd covers(wool). Detergent I just use baby stuff, so far I have been using all baby because there is no perfumes or anything in it. I also put baking soda in with it and sometimes vinegar in the rinse. Hope that helps.

Actually, I keep reading that its not good to use baby detergent because it will cause build up on the diapers and make them less absorbent. Here is a good article about it.

washing

Hi,

I was thinking for the soaker insert I would use microfiber and washcloths. I am hoping that these dry pretty quickly and are absorbant enough.

I was thinking I would do PUL or Fleece (either anitpill, polar or alpine) for the outers. For the fleece, do most people use just 1 layer?

A line in the bathroom is a good idea...Ill have to get one of thoes. I dont have a laundry room (just a closet where the washer/dryer is) so dont have to many options for drying locations. I was thinking with the Pocket AIO (since its only 2 layers...it would dry fairly quickly...or at least I hoped so).

Thanks for the tips on the washing...I used Dreft for #1...but maybe the baking soda and vingear will do just as well for the diapers.

Thanks,
Alicia

The artile says not to use soap. It says use detergent that is free of dyes.

I like to lay a wash cloth right in dd's dipe, it's great for catching poopies. And I have found it does add good absorbancy. The pockets dry quickly because the are unstuffed, I just don't know about pul and the dryer. As far as the line, home depot has a 4 line retractable for like $10 I think. That's the one we got

Oh and the fleece, if it's thick enough just one layer. I use the alpine from JoAnns so I use 2 layers b/c it seems a little thin and I like to be on the safe side.

Right, I misspoke. I think most of the baby products are soap, not detergent and/or contain softeners. Those are the reasons they cause buildup.

I am not sure how to tell the difference. The ALL baby I use says ultra laundry detergent. I have a front loading machine so I use only a little per laid anyway. Although I just noticed reading the ingrediants that it has perfume in it If I wanted something with perfume in it I would have just kept using my detergent. Anyway I am not sure how to tell the difference. But I use baking soda and vinager in the wash as well.

PUL does fine in the dryer. I've dried my AIOs on high forever and they work great. You really do need to dry newly sewn items on high to seal up the holes from the stitching too, it seems to make a big difference.

Thank you

Thank you all for your responses. That is good to know about the PUL and dryer. (especially sealing the holes). I am sure there are going to be instances when I need a diaper quick and need to have it in the dryer.

Thanks for letting me know about the retractable clothes line...Ill gone and pick one up

the microfleece from joans is my favorite too, also if you dont mind waiting a few weeks for PUL you can get it from a co-op it is usually around &5-6 much cheaper than buying it from a store.
