Tips on Figuring Out What It Is?

We moved into our new (to us) house two weeks ago. Last Sunday DD (19m) broke out in a horrible rash on her cheeks and arms. It began as a pimpley red very hot looking rash and over the course of the week has become more like raised sandpaper, while still being bumpy in places.

Of course when I decided to take her to the ped on Weds it had nearly completely faded away. There was enough there for him to feel that from all the descriptions and how its been acting, that it's an allergic reaction to something. At the same time, it looked like it was going away for good so we agreed to just wait and see. The next morning it was back in full force and continues to be today - still coming and going with no apparent rhyme or reason.

There are so many things it could potentially be - new laundry soap (although that one doesn't really pan out), eating plums and nectarines for the first time since last summer, too much sun last Sunday, something in the house, new carpet in the basement, new cedar fence going up in the yard, lots of new trees and on and on and on....

She has absolutely no other symptoms beyond the rash and were it not for the occassional itchiness, its not bugging her a bit. But its driving me up the wall!

We have no history of allergies so this is all new to us. Any of you more experienced mamas have any suggestions for us? We have a wcv on Monday and so we'll see what our regular ped has to say. We played phone tag all day yesterday up to the point when she was trying to wrangle her three kids onto a plan last night (she so rocks!) but never did get to actually talk.

I'm stumped and obsessed with figuring this out!!!

So here we are one year later and wallah! The same exact rash is back. This time its really itching her pretty bad - it started itching bad after I'd made this post last year.

So now I'm thinking it either has to do with sun exposure or some seasonal pollen. She is out in the sun nearly daily and has been since things warmed up though, so I'm more apt to think its a pollen.

I'm going to call our ped this afternoon. Since its back again she might have some ideas this time around.

Anyone know what the common allergens are in the air in Denver, CO in June?

Pollen.com has info on the predominant allergens on a given day, and you can get more on Colorado pollens here

Also you can get pollen info here and they'll send you a detailed breakdown if you sign up for email alerts.

Allergy skin prick testing for airborne pollens for your area would also probably help you identify it. We do a daily antihistamine during pollen season (Claritin for me; Zyrtec syrup for my younger son, Allegra syrup for my older son). All are once daily doses, and last 24 hours.

You can also sometimes cut back some on reactions by keeping the windows of your house closed during the day, and making sure your daughter showers and changes her clothes as soon as she comes in if she's been playing outside, so that you get the pollen off her skin as soon as possible.
