<<EDIT - See my update later in the thread, mom and baby are helathy>>

My water broke last night around 10:30 pm, without any cntx beforehand. Contractions were strong enough to wake me up at 3 am, and I got up around 4 because they are so much *more* uncomfortable lying down. Been on the ball, toilet, or walking around since, and am just trying to stay occupied and low-key. Cntx are very regular but not so intense yet - Obviously, if I can sit here and type I just talked to my HB midwife and she said to try to rest (duh, I tried that already) and don't be suprised if the cntx slow during the day and pick back up again tonight.

Any other mommas out there who were/are also early water-breakers? How long did it take you to really get going, and was it only strong at night?

My water broke first with dd and I had contractions at varying intensity and duration for about 18 hours after until she was born. Sounds like you're doing great!

With DS my water broke about 7 1/2 hours before I felt the first contraction which was at 2:30 AM and he was born 6 hours later.

With Penelope (our third) I had a slight leak Sunday around 5PM but wasn't sure if it was pee or not. No leaking overnight. Monday morning I started leaking again and knew it was my water and I started feeling the first twinges of contractions around 8 AM. They were very inconsistant and not text book at all. Penelope was born at 7:11 PM Monday evening.

Rest as much as you can and distract yourself Momma!!

Hiya, How ya doing? with my second , water broke early in the morning and i didnt get really going until late again that evening. But everyone is differnent. I expected to move along faster and it wasnt helped by my anixousness and going to the hospital for a midwife attended attempted vbac.

I wish you lots of luck!!!! Try to get busy with something, a project to keep your mind in a relaxed-active state like painting or making a cake.

With my first water broke at 3:40 am with out any contractions or anything before hand. First contraction came about an hour later and I had him in 4 1/2 hours total. Quick!

Last time, my water broke at 9PM, and twelve hours later I still was not having strong contractions. They were regular but not strong. Even though I was working with a group of doctors who specialize in homebirths, and was planning to have one, they had me come to the office for a non-stress(?) test and an ultrasound to make sure baby was okay without the fluid. I was only 1cm dilated and baby was at -2 station. They asked me to be admit myself into the hospital. I felt very disappointed. With no further progression by 1PM, they started Pitocin. I only dilated to 6cm and baby still at -2 station by that evening. It was very hard and painful labor without drugs. Finally at 9PM (24 hours after water broke) they prepared me for a c-section. Finally pain relief and baby was born at 9:55PM. This was extremely hard emotionally considering it was such a drastically different birth than we had planned. I definately don't want to discourage you, but rather to empower you to know that you don't have to accept the interventions the way I did. I believe given another 12-24 hours my baby would have been born without interventions. I just hadn't researched ahead of time to know that that's perfectly normal. I believe the doctors made their recommendations based on malpractice concerns (baby to be born within 24 hours of water breaking) over what was best for me and my baby. Since my experience, I have heard numerous people have gone days after water breaks before their baby is born. My own SIL went 5 days with a perfectly normal natural birth. So hang in there! I'm sure you're anxious and I hope it goes fast! But in case it doesn't know that that's normal too. Good luck and congratulations!

With my first, my water broke in a huge gush because DD was still floating, not engaged. After about 9 hours I had still not had a single contraction, so I ended up having a pitocin induction. Wish they'd let me wait longer - I'm another one who regrets accepting so many interventions! But hopefully you won't have to be so patient, maybe your baby has already arrived!

Funny you should ask. My water broke Friday night with no beforehand ctx. Ctx started right away and though not intense were only 2-3 minutes apart. 2 hours later they were pretty intense, still close together and 7 hours later he was born

Hope you had a quick birth like I did (though not as painful - posterior baby - ouch!)

still plugging along

Thanks so much for all the replies -
I am still in "early" labor, so baby is a while off yet. My mom had early water breaks and longish labors, so I am not feeling like there is any rush at this point. Baby's kicking and fluid's still clear/pink. I'm just trying to visualize optimum positioning for baby, and cervix melting away...

My cntx have been ranging from 30-90 sec long, 5-10 min apart all day (sometimes less, sometimes more). I did rest a bit on the couch this afternoon. It has been about 12 + hours of cntx, I guess.

I am *so* glad we decided late in pg to do this at home. i am so much more relaxed than I would be doing this with strangers watching me (and the clock and their policy manuals) constantly, not to mention i can be in my own bathroom and eat my own food. Of course, it is less clean and tidy, but that in some ways helps, too.

thanks again everybody. I hadn't managed to get my blessing ceremony/ritual together yet, so if any of you are the candle-lighting or wish/prayer/healing-vibe sending types, fly some of that energy on over to Oakland, CA for a virtual blessingway for me.

Howdy! My water broke early Sunday morning and I didn't start contractions until Monday night around 7pm after trying acupuncture, breast pumping and finally castor oil. After contractions started, labor was only 8 hours. Best of luck!!!

I'm a friend of Rachel's. She will post a birth story later, but said I could post that Emerson Asher was born June 13 at 2:16 pm. He was 9 lbs 2 oz, and 21 1/2 inches long. Yay for them!
