Question on washing

Hi,

Question on washing....

Do you rinse your diapers (in the toilet) before putting in the pail? Or is there no need...you just run a pre-wash in your washer?

Also, what type of detergent is everyone using?....I went looking today but wasnt sure what to get.

Thanks,
Alicia

I rinse the poopy diapers in the toilet by flusing and then wringing out and then spray them with a Bio Clean stain treatment and then put them in a "dry" pail. I have a frontloader, so I add some Oxy Bio Clean powder to my detergent and run the wash with a hot then cold rinse. I use the Green Mountain detergent.

I only dunk mine in the toilet to get the poopies off. I don't scrub, as long as most is off thats fine for me. I soak the dipe in cold water for about an hour before I wash(just fill my pail to cover the diapers) As far as detergent I have been using All Baby, but will probably switch as when I was ready the ingredients I saw it has fragrance in it.

For breastfed poo, I didn't do anything special, just a cold rinse before I washed with detergent in hot water, cold rinse.

With semi-solid poo, I put anything in the toilet that falls off, then let the washer take care of the rest. I do add a bit of detergent to the cold rinse to help take the poo away, then I add a bit more to the hot wash, and two cold rinses.

For me, I found that rinsing the poopy diapers as they occur doesn't result in any less staining than the method I just described.

Hi

Thanks for the responses. I remember with #1 her bf poops stained if I didn't get them right away. Do you find that even in going with the pre-rinse cold then hot wash...it still is stained...or does it usually all come out?

Even with bf poop, even with pre-rinsing, I found that our diapers stained. Microfleece helped, as did drying in the sun. I try not to worry about it anymore, not worth the energy.

We have a shower head that is attached to a hose. There is a name for it and I'm a little braindead this morning I rinse all poopy (breastfed and big boy) diapers in the tub with that. Then I wash all diapers in HOT with a tiny bit of detergent (arm and hammer perfume and dye free) and baking soda. Rinse twice in cold and hang in the sun to dry. My diapers never get "crunchy" or stiff, they come off the clothesline soft. They used to get crunchy, but then I started using less detergent. problem solved!

hi

That is good to know about the microfleece , as most of my diapers have thoes as insides. I am doing a few with stretch terry and velour to see if I like it too. I also have a shower head that I think the hose may be long enough to reach the toilet so I can wash everything off.

Thanks so much for your inputs.

One more question about detergents...would any detergent be okay as long as it is free of perfume and dyes? I used dreft with my oldest and was thinking about using that...if I look at the back of the label...I just dont know exactly what to look for so that it is a "good" detergent.

Thanks

Look at this link:

It is an awesome chart of different detergents and how they rate for washing diapers. It also explains a lot about the additives in detergents what they do to diapers.

You rock! I was wondering the same thing about what detergent. I had an idea that might help with the diaper staining issue. With mine I always line with washcloths(I bought them special for the diapers) to help catch the poopies plus it as a little more absorbancy without the "bulk". Maybe that would help with the poopie stains. I don't have the stain problem as my DD is older and isn't bfing anymore. But someday hopefully I will have another baby.

Thank you!!

Thank you...this was exactly what I was looking for. Looks like Sun Laundry detergent is really good for pockets....now I just have to find it :-)

I just dump/scrape with TP most of the poo off, then toss into a dry pail. I do a cold pre-rinse with baking soda before the hot wash and have minimal staining and no stink. But I've learned the hard way that if I don't wash every other day I will have stink!
