HELP!!!(little bit long)

My ds (11 months), got what I think looks like hives on Thursday morning--he woke up with them. I took him to CareNow and they said it looked like an allergic reaction (we're talking large red areas on his stomach), so they gave him a steroid and Benadryl. Well, I didn't want to give him both of them together because I knew that steroids sometimes keep you from sleeping well and the same with Benadry, so I only gave him the steroid, but now I"m giving him the Benadryl, but his rash will get better, then worse. Yesterday, he ate the same cereal he's been eating for weeks (with goat's milk). I had multi-grain Cheerios and I gave him a few bites. About an hour later, he had a few more spots on his stomach, but after I nursed him about two hours later, his face immediately broke out! I also had half a cinnamon roll. My question is, how am I going to find out if this is really a food allergy or not? He has already eaten most of the things on the highly allergic list--dairy (I put some cow's milk on his cereal when he first started eating it and I have milk in my oatmeal that I usually eat every day and he helps me eat it), soy- there's soy something or other in practically everything!, wheat is in everything he's been eatin gup to now, he hasn't had any nuts and he's already eaten scrambled eggs or helped me with quiche. Can I continue to eat and feed him things that he's already had for the past few weeks/months? Do I need to totally cut out everything? Also, there was a website that said hives can be due to a virus, but how do I figure that out too? I feel so bad for him! He looked better before he went to bed last night, but it had been about 3:00 when I gave him Benadryl, so I couldn't give him any before he went to bed and when he got up this morning, it was all red and on his face and everywhere all over again! I don't know what to do!

How is he now?
I'm sorry he's had a reaction.

If I were you, I would nurse him exclusively for a few more months. Don't eat anymore cinnamon, anything with nuts, large amts of soy or berries. Just be careful about allergic foods.
My son has lots of allergies and he's just now really starting to eat a variety of solids at 16 months.
Check out the Eczema and Healing the Gut threads here on MDC. JaneS in particular could really help you.
I hope you get if figured out soon. Just be careful!

Oh and definitely absolutely positively don't give that child any peanut/butter!

I had hives my entire childhood. And spent it on Benedyryl (which I had a chance to revisit as an adult and realize just how drugged I was). I was tested (conventional western medicine way) for allergies and came up with a bunch of random things. When my son was born and spent his first 20 mnths sick (ear infections, upper resporitory, ect) I finally found out he (and I ) were gluten intolerant. I believe now that all my "allergies" were the result of being raised on lot's of gluten and my body fighting back. I would check out a food elimination diet (keep a food diary) and see if there are any kinisiologists (muscle testing) who deal with testing for food sensitivities. A person could test okay for allergies but still be "senstive" or "intolerant" and have a reaction. Most of all, watch closely and use your mothers intution.
