Smelly diapers

First off, I don't know where to put this where it will actually be read by someone so I hope no mind minds. I didn't make these dipes myself but need some help.

I'm using hemp inserts in fleece/PUL pockets that go inside fleece/PUL covers (Heavenly Hineys). I'm finding that once DD pee's in them, they smell AWFUL! They just reek. It comes right out when we wash them but in the meantime, it's just awful.

This is our only experience with cloth diapers. Is it similar with regular cotton prefolds? Is this just what it's like with hemp? Or is it the fleece? Is there anything I can do???

You probably have diaper stink in your inserts. It is more common in hemp for most people, but any diaper can get it, except maybe flats. Flats are usually just one layer and wash and rinse really well. The stink is caused by a build-up of bacteria and detergent in your inserts. Try washing just your inserts in a hot, hot wash, then follow it with multiple hot rinses to get all the detergent out. This is called stripping. Rinse until there are no bubbles left. You can speed the process up a bit by lowering the water level in your washer so that the inserts beat against each other, that helps. Also turn your water heater up all the way while you strip, and try not to do cold rinses between hot rinses. I either choose the prewash cycle on my washer for hot rinses, or I chose the warm/warm cycle and turn the cold water intake valve off so the machine fills only with hot water.

Running mini-strips occasionally helps to keep your diapers smelling nice. There are other cures too. A bit of bleach usually works, but it will break down your diapers faster. Other people swear by Charlie's detergent, or Simple Green and baking soda, or sportwash, or ....really it is a matter of finding what works for your diapers with your water and your baby.

There is a Diapering forum for general questions, you might find more answers there and don't be surprised if your post here is moved. But it isn't a problem, the boards are confusing at first.

Good luck!
