who is or plans to be a babywearer? - Page 2

I'll get the slingset
Any suggestions for a first timer?

I'm really nterested in babywearing, but there seems to be so many choices, it's overwhelming.

FWIW, I'm 5'3" ish, medium build, well-endowed. DH is 6 feet, medium build. Any suggestions for something both of us can use that's easy to get the hang of?

I have a homemade ring sling and it has holes in it from the first two wear and tear.... I want to switch to a stretchier, more versatile sling.... The Mei Tei ones look so cool!

Both ds and dd loved the sling. Dd loved being where she could see all the action and ds just needed his mama all the time.

I would have used them more, but I hurt my shoulder at work and had to take a break.

Our new arrival though will start a new sling era.

Oh, you can't stop with one ... hee hee hee. I think my all-around fav for ease and length of use (newborn to toddler) has got to be the Adjustable Fleece Pouch from Kangaroo Korner. Mine is almost 4 years old and going strong. It has snaps instead of the ring, and a big pouch for the babe, good for front, side or back carry. Easy to switch from shorter to taller/whatever person by changing the snaps (or you may not even need to).

I did find that it was not my fav for doing 'chores' or long walks, but for all-around use (even up to cooking while nursing!) the AFP is awesome. I live in a relatively humid area (mid-atlantic) but the fleece didn't bother me even in the summer -- I just wore lighter tops. Ditto in winter, didn't need a heavy sweater with the pouch on. There is a cotton version, too, but I don't think it is as stretchy and comfy.

YMMV with slings, for sure! Good luck, have fun babywearing!

Good to hear the fleece wasn't to much in summer, I've always wondered about that.

The ring slings end up with that big tail right? How do you deal with that?

And yes, I already see this becoming an obsession. An "I must try every type even though I already love XYZ sling" sort of obsession.

Ah, well that can be an advantage. If you like more privacy while nursing, you can use the tail as a cover, or if the weather is sunny (or windy etc) the tail is extra wrapping. It's also nice if you like to use the sling as a blanket outside, or cloth under the babe if you're visiting somehwere with hard floors or need a place for a diaper change. If you have a tail with a pocket that can be handy, too.

Eventually I found the tail to be annoying extra bulk, but that's just me. The yahoo disucssion list is a great resource for info on carriers/slings- http://groups.yahoo.com/group/babywearing/

You can find ring slings with sewn tails if you like the ring sling premise but don't want the extra fabric, but like mojumi said, there are good things about tails. You can also buy a sling with a shorter tail (the difference between a medium and small Maya Wrap is that the tail on the small is 6 inches shorter) or shorten it yourself.

I love this thread! We love wearing our baby (now toddler) and I have already started shopping around for a few new treats. We adore our Storchenwiege wrap, but it is a bit large for some of the carries. In an ideal world, I'd love to try a Didy as well but $$ might be an issue. I also have a Premaxx baby bag and a new native sling. Has anyone tried a Kangaroo Korner adjustable fleece pouch? I'd love to go with a fleece pouch since baby is due in the fall (and our winters come early!) Post other fleece suggestions as well! It is so easy to get addicted to these things- the Eden velveteen Mei Tei looks beautiful and I am always tempted to try a ring sling.

Heh heh, you can see my pp where I wax eloquent on my many favorite features of this carrier. My absolute fav ... although I have a new Kozy, and am loving that these days to backcarry toddler dd despite pg tummy.

I'm pretty sure that we're going to start out with an Ellaroo ring sling and a Babyhawk mei tai. Eventually I would like to try out a wrap type carrier, but I like the low learing curve for the mei tai and ring sling for while the baby is a teeny weeny squirmy thing! Also, DH and I can both wear the same sizes in both of these styles, which is a bonus to our budget!

Thanks for the advice and the Yahoo! group!

Hi everyone!

I'm a babywearer, too! I have a homemade padded ring sling (I didn't make it, a friend did) and a mei tai. I love them both. The rs is a lot easier to use in this super windy part of the country. Even though Ds (21 months) is around 27 lbs. he feels light as a feather in either carrier.

My brother in law is getting married on my due date so I'm going to buy a nice, reversible pouch sling just in case we get to go to their wedding. The RS is blue plaid with cats all over it and the MT has a snow skiing scene. Not exactly fit for a fancy wedding

For all the mamas who have back peoblems:
I have muscular scoliosis, some curve of the spine now (although I didn't used to), hip dysplasia, arthritic pain in my joints caused by hypermobility syndrome and I'm not permitted to lift more than ten pounds... without my carriers, wraps and slings I would *not be able* to hold my babies without pain!! They are LIFESAVERS!!

I have:
Over the Shoulder Baby Holder: totally awesome. This is one of my top favourites in my stash. I always loved this.
New Native: My husband likes this better than I do.
HotSling: Love this, too!
Ultimate Baby Wrap: My ultimate favourite!
Kozy Carrier
mamababy sling
Mayawrap
Ergo: Can't get enough of this.

Have had previously, or have tried:
Baby Trekker: I had to give this one up not because I didn't like it, but because my daughter got to be 60% of my height!!
Nojo: UGH UGH UGH! Never.
Snugli: Crap!
Bjorn: Expensive crap!

After reading nojumi's raves about the Kangaroo Korner adjustable fleece pouch I think I will need to add it to my list of things to try. I really wants a mei tei too but I don't know what style.

I wish I received a commission from them! I've been singing the praises of my AFP across the continent and overseas. Hope you love it, too.

Just wanted to add that (if you haven't already ) you all should check out www.thebabywearer.com's forums. There's so much info there! Lots of general babywearing tips and tons of carrier-type specifics...I've been hanging around there the past couple of weeks and I now have a nicely sized wish list

www.attachedtobaby.com
Once I found that site- I splurged & bought a few more for the new baby...

I have:
Ergo (NG...I've had both & have LOVED them!)
Didymos wrap
Kangaroo Korner Adjustable Fleece Pouch
Hotsling reversible pouch
Hotsling fleece pouch
Zolo ring sling
EllaRoo wrap
Storchenweige wrap
Pea In the Pod Pouch

I like the ease of a pouch or sling for the NB period (my NBs are tiny)...but need a 2-shoulder carrier for an older baby due to a shoulder/arm/back injury from a previous car accident.

I also have a Hip Hugger that I'm selling
Have had (& didn't like as much)...Baby Trekker, Nojo, Baby Bjorn, Ultimate Baby Wrap, frame pack, ring sling (no name), Kozy...and others

BCmamaof5 - you have all the wraps I want to try! Which do you like best of your Didymos, EllaRoo, & Storchenweige?
I will be using a homemade wrap for the first few months and then switching to my Ergo as my baby gets older.
I absolutly cannot wear anything that just goes over one shoulder and does not distribute weight evenly. I used to have a ring sling and it was absolute torture and my chiro gave me crap about using it everytime he saw me.

BC Mama of 5- what do you think of your zolo ring sling? I love my Storch wrap, but want to try a ring sling this time around. Would love to hear your thoughts!
