anyone read above article (and its numerous spinnoffs) and its conclusion that more authoritarian parenting styles contribute to obesity by age 5?

irrespective of what you think of that conclusion, look at the methodology... the 4 parenting styles are authoritarain, authoritative, permissive, and neglectful. "authoritative" is the "good" one, closest to what we all would group under "GD"

permissive and neglectful are both in the no-D category, (and also correlate to higher risk for obesity, according to this article).

i wonder whether such a classification is really required to prove a point like this? or are these observed to be the most prevalent styles?

You need a subscription to read the full text, but just among ourselves, whaddya think?

I think it's hard to separate parenting style from socioeconomic and cultural situations. It's hard for studies like this to use good controls because different types of parents tend to come from different backgrounds and have more differences than just discipline style. (Differences such as diet, ideas about food, lifestyle patterns.)

Actually, the lowest risk of obesity was to kids of permissive mothers. This is funny, because you'd think they'd be permissive about treats and junk food as well as other things. Maybe kids can self-regulate better than people think.

Blah... I am none of them. I don't have a label. Boo-hoo

They probably combine permissive and concensual together in one group.

Yeah, what is permissive? Personally, I always picture permissive parents as those parents who follow their children around threatening them or telling them not to do things, but then never do. So their kids are subjected to this low-level irritation until they tune their parents out completely. There's a mom like this that comes to our library storytime sometimes, honestly, she drives me nuts. Her dd must be about 2, and she follows her around saying, "No, no, no, we're not going to do that, don't do that, please don't do that," as dd pulls books of the shelves, smacks babies, throws puzzles on the floor, whatever.

This is what the article stated:

Quote:
Children of permissive (n = 132) and neglectful (n = 263) mothers were twice as likely to be overweight, compared with children of authoritative mothers.
Is there another location in the text or in another article where they said something different?
