Is there anything that will whiten whites like bleach does?

We have very hard water and whites turn dingy fairly quickly. I used to bleach them, when I used bleach and it helped some. Is there anything I can use in my wash that will naturally keep them white?

I don't know if this is any better, but I have found that if I use a tiny amount (half of less of what it says to use) of water softener, my whites are whiter.

Adding a cup of baking soda to your wash softens the water and will help your clothes get cleaner and whiter. Some people use borax or washing soda, but since the pH of those two items are high, I don't use them (high pH is not good when in contact with bare skin and I know that my clothes can potentially be damaged or fade faster with a strong pH). I personally love adding baking soda to my washer and like the way my clothes come out.

As mentioned, sun drying does naturally bleach clothes too, but I live in a big city and in an apartment, so I can't personally give that advice since I don't line dry. :

Some other alternatives: Lemon juice is a natural bleach - you can use that in your rinse cycle. You can also use bleach-alternative or an oxygen bleach (like OxyClean).

We use oxyclean. I've tried sunning, but nothing turns out any whiter.

I use non-chlorine bleach, which is a strong dilution of hydrogen peroxide.

Ecover and Seventh Generation both make it.

My laundry & dipes always turn orange because of the high amount of iron in our water. I have yet to find anything to help. Not even bleach works for us!
