baby food jar candles?

post #1 of 9

I am cleaning out my house and just realized I have TONS of baby food jars as well as 50 lbs of soy wax left from my wedding 3 years ago

I want to make EO candles (for xmas gift baskets)

I figure over the summer I can decorate the jars before hand (or should I fill them with wax first?) if so is there anything I can use to preserve the EO? will they go rancid made so far in advance?

anyone have any great ideas for decorating the jars? painting/ decoupage/etc? (this is mainly what I am looking for here!)

TIA for any ideas!

There's always using tissue paper and gluing it to the sides of the jars, overlapping. The kiddos could really get into that! I think you should decorate after, I did that with mini scented jelly jars with baby food jars.

Scented potpourri jelly, here's the recipe:
8 oz liquid potpourri
2 envelopes of Knox gelatin
Containers (canning jar, unique bottles, bowls, etc)

Boil the liquid, then add the gelatin. Stir until dissolved. Pour into containers and cool. You can add embellishments such as flowers or shells to the jelly while it is cooling. You may change the color of the jelly with a little food coloring as well. Once cool, decorate the containers with ribbons, lace, or whatever you desire.

One year for Valentine's Day gifts I had my kids decorate baby food jars with heart stickers, etc. then we painted glue over the whole things including the stickers and then we rolled it all in sugar. We put those little tea light candles inside the jar. It was a fun to make and a big hit as presents because yu can keep the jar and replace the candle after it has burned out.

what are eo candles? (50 lb of soy wax! luck out!) i am about to get started making soy candles (as soon as I can afford a nice selection of essential oils) & honestly, i think plain, clear, & uncluttery looks best. you could get that glass etching stuff to play with if you really felt the need to get crafty beyond making the candles themselves.

thanks for posting the jelly jar recipe! how long do these keep their scent for?

eo=essential oil

I would love to try glass etching or glass painting. I am trying to do these so they don't look like my kiddos helped me make them I am clueless as to what I will need or how to do etching and such, but I will do a search on google.

They keep the scent for a pretty long time, but the jelly starts to go away quickly. It's hard and/or all gone after a month. I haven't figured out how to make them last longer.

We've also been playing with finding some nice uses for those jars. We had bad luck with the glass etching stuff, it seemed to work well up close, but never took well enough to really etch, you had to really look to see it (probably operator error though ). I have tried the glass paint pens. I was able to put a small symbol and a couple words pretty nicely on a wine glass (needed a bigger surface to test) and I really liked the clean clook of it, definately not kid looking. Best part was, the pens were on sale, and I see them on sale all the time at our craft stores, so you might be able to test them without spending a lot.
