Sadly, this is the "normal" procedure in Denmark. You have all consultations with midwife X. Then the moment you go into labor, either you go the hospital where a total stranger becomes your midwife, or if you are home - birthing, you call the hospital, and they then send out a total stranger you have never met before.

It is not in the least bit funny.

However, the posts on this forum are funny. The biggest question I get about my upcoming hb is "how far are you from the hospital?"

my mom wanted to know if the midwife had an "incubator" in case the babies were small!

I said, "Mom, they're babies not chicks!"

That's funny, I instantly think, isn't that what chest's and skin are for?

Exactly what I ultimately pointed out to my mom!

When I was born I had some respiratory problems evidently and spent my first night in an "incubator" (I assume this is a warming bed/isolette), so my mom thinks this is very important. She's not one to question medical people. In fact the only reason I think she was comfortable with the idea of my homebirth was because I am a nurse practitioner. I didn't bother to tell her that everything I know about normal birth was learned outside of nursing school!

You know, I never thought of this before several women pointed it out to me just now. It's true that LOTS of women in the hospital have this kind of care and I should have pointed that out to FIL, just to rock his world a little. It certainly would have been an interesting discussion....

And at least you up/ucers don't have to put up with a stranger at the end....KWIM?

A relative asked me if I had to go to the hospital after I had the baby and I said no. Then she looks at me with all seriousness and asked, "Didn't he split you open when he came out?" :

When I was planning my first home birth, my mother (a nurse) assumed I would be lying down on the table, and asked "What do the midwives use for stirrups, then? Piles of pillows?"

COME ON YOU GUYS! How can anyone give birth without the PING machine?! :
Very important, the machine that goes PING. And expensive, so you know it's necessary!

I'm loving/hating these by the way. They're so funny but so... sad.

My favorite is "she said 'uhh, yup, you're still pregnant!'"

HOW could I forget about the machine that goes PING?! Well, at least I can afford the initial payment on it since I'm not paying for a midwife this time.

Ahhh I can see it now:
random person: "So, you had a midwife atyour homebirth right?"
me: "No, but we did have the machine that goes PING."
RP: "Oh, phew! You were totally safe then!"

Maybe he wasn't sure whether you were hiring a medical professional to attend the birth? If so, then it's not a dumb question at all.

Is anyone working to change this? Or is it just fine with the majority of women?

fourlittlebirds - No, they knew we were having a homebirth w/midwives. I'm pretty sure his world is so narrow he doesn't even know that there are women out there *choosing* to have unattended births!
