A friends birth

I saw an old friend and his wife the other day at my house. We were discussing births. With the birth of her daughter she went into labor and went to the hospital- the doctor was going out of town - so he unbeknownst to her he gave her a tranquilizer and sent her home. She did continue on with labor tho- and was in her mothers hottub then finally went back to the hospital. This happened 9 months ago. Sickening.

When i said- we had our baby at home- the DAD said- if we ever had another one we will do that. We should have sued the hospital and they are horrible. So sad.

wow. how do you not know you are given a tranquilizer though?

At least they realize that this is a really crappy thing and are considering hb in the future. Most sad stories I hear about are in the context of sweetness and roses.

Did they find out it was a tranquilizer from hospital records? I'm trying to picture how one gets a tranq in the hospital and doens't know and is sent home, or she didnt' consent and found out/figured it out seconds or minutes later (like I did with post partum pitocin).

I knonw. My thought is that the doctor said that he was going to give her "something" then they later found out why and what? I will ask to clarify that tho. He probally told her that he was going to give her something to "slow it down" and to go on home- then later they figured it out while refl;ecting? Or speaking with nurses? this is the jist that I get. The same with lots of our hospital births- it is confusing- and you want to trust the doctor.? I had a million questions- but we were in a group and did not want to drill her ya know? But it sounds like regardless the doctor did "something" to meet his needs- not the mothers.

probably her doctor just gave a pill and said "here, take this. it'll help you sleep"

i'm glad that they dedcided on a hb next time.

I swear doctors take advantage of the altered mental state women can sometimes be in during labor. When I had my first, I remember asking for medicine, and I still had my wits about me enough to understand what I was being given, what would happen, etc... Then later I had an epidural and again, I still knew what was going on. I was in such horrible pain and so scared after the epi didn't take I continued asking for more medicine- but at this point I was delirious and did not know what was going on. I was given Stadol with no information, no way to even PROCESS any information if someone had said anything to me, and coming to this realization angered me later on. How do you give someone narcotics who cannot even understand what is happening to them? I felt that I was taken advantage of in this situation- and it makes me sick that this happens to other people.

My doctor did this also. I don't know how in the heck they can get away with it! It's awful! My water was "leaking" less than 1 hour after a vag exam so the ob could check if I was dialated. I was 37 wks along. Went to the hospital, got put on pitocin. 24 hrs. later the Pitocin wasn't working. The ob finished breaking my water during yet another vag. exam (not with the tool, just by doing the exam). Found out later she was going on vacation the next week! Uggg. :

I know how that goes! I think the nurses were tired of me (had already been in the hospital for 24hrs before I started laboring [when they finished breaking my water]) I was soo uncomfortable, and they wouldn't let me get up (monitors), so I asked for some pain medication. The nurse put it in my IV. She said this'll make you a little dizzy. I passed out and didn't really wake up until 12 hours later, when I felt like I needed to push!

So sorry for your friends' messed up birth. Glad they're thinking about hb! We're definately doing a hb next time too!!

I am to. They will not be having kids for awhile if at all tho! She has 2 year old twin boys and a 9 month old girl. I to was glad that they recognized something was wrong. It is so often that Doctor means God to folks and they can not see thru the bullshit.
So sorry for you experiences also.

It is a bummer that it takes something anywhere from highly questionable to outright tragic to make people see the forest through the trees, to which I blame a Dr=God culture we live in.

If Dr's told people that standing outside and opening an umbrella would make it rain, they would probably believe it.: Ok not literally...but it's the same logic.
