UTI thread opinions needed, please!

I've had this thought, and reading through the UTI thread I noticed that several others of you have had the same thought. When there are studies that show a miniscule increase in UTI risk in intact boys, are those particular boys being prematurely retracted?

I bet, that if a large scale study was done comparing healthy full-term circumcised infant boys to healthy full-term intact infant boys who were never retracted under any circumstance, then the rates would either be the same or the intact boys would actually have lower rates.

My DS developed a UTI at 5 weeks, and he was never retracted. An ultrasound revealed he had hydronephrosis which may or may not have contributed to the UTI. My ped Urologist said when he gets called to the ER to treat male babies with UTIs, they are almost always intact. Over the age of 6-8 mos, the intact/circ babies get UTIs at the same rates.

I would think any parent smart enough to leave their baby intact would be smart enough to know not to retract it....but that's JMHO.

A friend of mine has talked about how her brother had to be circed at age 9 or 10 or something because repeated infections...and he was being prematurely retracted/cleaned.
I also think many people don't equate any forcible pulling back of the foreskin yo be retraction (which it is, and can cause the same damage).

I'd say that yes, of course UTI's are possible with absolutely no forcible retraction...but I'd be willing to bet that the majority are from being retracted.

When intact care came up on another board, one woman said that her doctor "gently" retracted it when he was born, and now all she has to do is gently (yeah right, ugh) pull it back at each daiper change and wipe it with a wet wipe. Her baby was only 2 weeks old! I made a huge speil about how she isn't supposed to do that and why, so I can only hope she read it and believed it. Though I don't know if she will since her all knowing doctor told her to do it.
