are potato and sweet potato the same? if you are allergic to one are you allergic to the other?

No, I believe they are two different families. Not sure of the family names.

White potatoes are from the nightshade family, like tomatoes. This is why you can't eat the leaves/eyes!

Sweet potatoes are related to morning glories.

Yams are from yet another family. There are lots of types of yams.

What supermarkets usually call yams are actually sweet potatoes. If you want real yams, try an Asian or specialty grocery.

My ds3 was allergic to white potatoes and loved sweet potatoes! Now he can eat either.

I can't eat white potatos but I can eat sweet potatos and yams.

just to reinforce what everyone else has been saying... DS had testing done by a naturopathic doctor and they test separately for potatoes and sweet potatoes. DS shows sensitivities to white potatoes but not sweet potatoes.
