Tie dye help

Ds wants his room to be in the "seventies" style. I want to do a tie dye wall hanging. I want the background to be tie dye and there to be a white peace sign on it. Should I tie dye, then wait for it to dry, then squirt on some bleach gel in the peace sign shape? Or does someone have a better idea?

You could make a gutta resist out of something sturdy (I've heard of flour, peanut butter, mashed potatoes), oh just about anything that could take the dyeing process. Wax would be best, but then you have to boil it out, preferably with washing soda in the boil and I can't imagine boiling a sheet.

You don't have to boil the wax out, when I did batik we just ironed it out, using paper bags on both sides of the fabric, it soaks into the paper.

Wax seems like the best bet. Ironing should work. How arte you going to dye it? You will want to test first but but I do an easy batik with school glue. Just brush it on and let it dry. i usually use spray dye whioch wouldn't work with tie dye. But it it is worth a try to see if the glue will hold up to the dying process.

I've done tie dyed hearts on T-Shirts by drawing an outline of the heart on the tshirt & then sewing around it with a smallish running stitch & gathering it tight. Then scrunching up the rest of the tshirt with rubber bands. I used the squirt on dye method not the dunking it in method. I guess this could work with a peace sign. Altho' batik would probably be more safe.

Hi,

A really painless way to do this is to use Simply Spray product---make a peace sign stencil (they have advice on their website)apply it, then create a tie-dye effect using the simplyspray stuff. Comes in lots of colors (metallics, too)...go to www.Simplyspray .com...you can either by it through Joanne's or direct from them, I think.

Have fun...
