Intact help?

Hi,
I haven't been on here for a while, but I could use a little help with info on the intact penis. I was hoping to ask people with experience before going to my doctor because my doctors seem to be only moderately intact-friendly and I'm not sure how that will go. Anyway....

After giving my 10-month-old a bath, I decided to gently check if his foreskin had retracted on it's own yet, (don't ask me why, I don't know. It just seemed like a good idea at the time. ) I thought it rather unlikely from everything I've read. I've also been very careful to tell everyone who changes his diaper not to retract it forceably and have never noticed any unusual irritation in the diaper area. So...

I checked and, indeed, it retracts much of the way back. I didn't even really try to push it back all the way becuase I know better than to forceably retract. I was surprised it retracted at all, but the glans looks mostly healthy except right around the, for lack of a better term, forgive me, but 'pee-hole'. The area right there is red, compared to the rest of the glans, which is purple. It may or may not be inflamed, hard to tell, but I think so. I had my hubby there with a flashlight to see what he thought. He didn't know any better than me, (he's circ'd). He has been fussier lately, but is fine and happy most of the time. And that's not a sure-fire indicator because he's also getting a tooth.

So, is that area supposed to be redder that the rest of the glans or is that what an infection looks like? My first son was, undortunately circ'd, so I don't have experience with an intact penis.

The other thing is: Do I have to pull it back to clean it now? Is the fact that I haven't pulled it back, (because I didn't know it was ready), the reason it's like this? Something tells me I could answer my own questions here, but I'm not confident. Is this common and what is it a symptom of?

I am, like I said, slightly hesitant to take him to the doc right away if I can figure it out on my own. I'm not trying to substitute for medical care. If it's needed, I'll be there with the quickness, but I don't want to do that if I can help it. I have gotten a few not-altogether-intact-friendly comments, although they know enough not to forcibly retract and said they had some experience with intact penises. If anyone knows any info on this, it would be much appreciated. I can find diagrams, but not color pictures to tell me what's normal.

Thanks in advance!

My understanding is that should not pull his foreskin back AT ALL. Since its not attached to your body you do not know at which point it is causing him pain.

Leave it alone would be my suggestion.

Until puberty there is no need to wash under it unless the child who owns it wants to do so. Doing so could cause damage since he is the only one who would know how far it goes back without pain. Also pulling it back can cause bacteria to get in there causing all sorts of issues. Around the opening were the pee comes out it is totally normal for it to be a bit redder. Unless he is in pain or having trouble peeing I wouldnt give it another thought. I can understand being curious i know i am about how the normal penis is : since my dh is circed. When he becomes retractable he will let u know. Most of the time they think it is super neat and come running to show it off. Like the pp's have said just let it be.

Thank you!

Wow, that's a relief! I half feared everyone would say, "run to the doctor now!" I will gladly leave it alone from here on out. Thank you for your advice. I can be so silly!

Being red and purple is a natural state. It's like the inside of any other orifice. The glans are meant to be an internal organ covered by the foreskin. The only reason most penis's you see are not colorful is because they have had to acclimate to being unnaturally exposed. So the color is totally normal (and if it is a little bit irritated, it may be from being retracted even if you thought it didn't offer resistance).

Also there's a big difference between being irritated and being infected as well. Kind of like if you use a unusually caustic soap when you are washing and you get a little bit irritated down there. Doesn't mean you're infected, it means the mucous membranes are irritated from being tampered with - same thing in little boys whose foreskins are tampered with. And FYI- it's not uncommon for the tip of the foreskin to get a little red and irritated from time to time especially as he's running around naked, being more active and playing with it more. Just try to remember that it's the foreskin thats protecting the penis from being irritated like that.

As for the retraction, don't do it. Even if it seems to be retracting well. The only person that should retract it is your son. He will retract it on his own when he is ready/interested. You can let him know when he's older that he may want to clean under the foreskin after its retractible. And by clean I mean rinse not scrub.

And please continue to prevent anyone including doctors from retracting it "at all." Just because it seems retractable now doesn't mean it wont go through stages of attachment and non-attachment as it naturally goes through the process (so don't freak out if it's not retractable in a year).

Hope this helps.

We're pretty anti dr around here. Because most Dr's are complete and utter asshats when it comes to the knowledge of the intact penis. They just see it as one of three things.

Money from repeated infections, more visits, more insurance pay outs, then finally a circ.

Unfinished business, wont even LOOK at your son unless you cut him

or

Willing to be educated (these are very rare creatures, last time I checked you have to really look in the castle of AAAARRRGGGH to get one of these..and you have to get through the volley of bovine lobbed at you from above)

Just FYI:
Although I will NEVER retract his foreskin again, I do think that it didn't hurt my lil' guy when I checked because he didn't and still doesn't show any upset. He and his peepee have no sign of discomfort. I thought I would mention that, in case anyone was cringing at my silly mistake . I really think it was naturally separated as far as I pulled it back, since I am very afraid of it being forced back, (the idea of a fingernail being ripped off, YIKES! ), so I was very gentle . I knew enough to know not to retract it FORCIBLY, but unfortunately thought that when it separates on it's own, you should pull it back and clean it. Thank goodness I have this site, or I may have hurt my lil booboFORCIBLYo at some point.

You don't need to pull it back and wash under it because whatever part of the glans is separated, as he sits there in the bathtub, the water will get under the foreskin and "clean" that part of the glans (or the entire glans should he be all the way separated) by default. KWIM?
