Are enemas safe during pregnancy????

I am 32 weeks pregnant, and was wondering if it was safe to use an enema. I know that many elect to have an enema the day that they go into labor. So, I just want to make sure that this is not going to make me go into preterm labor.

Yikes! I would imagine it would be ok, though I am not sure why you would want one : You may want to check with your caregiver first though.

Enemas irritate your intestinal lining, which causes a prostaglandin release, which is what can trigger labor. Enemas are used by some midwives to help get labor going. I would advise against it at this time. Have you tried fiber instead?

Call your care provider first.

While I do recommend having one while you are in labor... its nice not having to worry about pooping for a couple of days after delivery. : I wouldn't do one before hand. Especially at 32 weeks.

Try eating more fiber. Bran muffins or dried fruit. Dried figs and apricots always help get things moving for me.
