Why did my fermented drink get moldy?

I made NT ginger ale a month or so ago. I followed the recipe, except I used two quart-sized jars instead of a one two-quart sized jar. I drank one and opened the other last night and it was moldy. Does that mean there's a problem with the whey? I've also had a batch of ketchup get moldy on me. What am I doing wrong?

*bump*

Anyone know?

As it stews you should check it and skim the scum off the top. If it still smells good and has good flavor, I'd consume it.

This may be completely unrelated to your situation but I'll say it just in case it makes sense for you too. A couple of yrs ago I brewed kombucha regularly, using 3-4 different containers. One of them always resulted in mold even though I used the exact same procedures and washed it meticulously. After about 4-5 tries with it, I just started using it to store dry goods. I have no idea why, but there was something about that container that didn't agree with fermenting food.

That's pretty wild Stacey. If you ever have a chance to take a picture of the containers, it would be entertaining to at least speculate as to why.
