Swaddling question

I'm surprised to see many of you still swaddling your babes. I never really swaddled any of mine. Maybe a handful of times each and only in the first week or so. Can you please tell me a bit about swaddling and the benefits, especially as our babies are getting older?

I swaddled until she got too big for her small swaddlers and too hot for her large fleece swaddler.

I use a junk store cotton sheet. I cut in in 4x4' squares. When it got warmer, I cut the squares along the diagonal, so I now swaddle in a right triangle of 4'x4'xsqrt(2)*4'
