Couldn't nurse at VS (Boston) today because it's unsanitary!! Update Post 40

I'm so livid!! I had been out shopping with my mom in Boston's Fanuel Hall and DD(9 mo) was starting to get upset because it was time to nurse. She has a VERY hard time nursing in crowds. She's easily distracted and gets upset. It had probably been about three hours. I had planned on stopping in VS anyway to look around, but I knew she needed to nurse and shopping with a hungry infant won't go well.

So, the employee comes up to me and this is the exchange:

Her: Hi can I help you

Me: Yes I wanted to know if I could use your changing room for a moment.

Her: (looks at DD and says hesitantly) Oh, to change her?

Me: No, to nurse her.

Her: Well, actually there is a bathroom right across the way there.

Me: (Disgusted look on my face) I'm not nursing her in the bathroom. Would you eat in the bathroom?

Her: Well, it's just that lots of women are changing in there and well, it's unsanitary.

Me: (Literally stood there, jaw open staring at her for a good 10 seconds) Are you telling me that my breastmilk is unsanitary?

Her: It's just store Policy

Me: Actually, I believe VS was recently in the news for denying a nursing mother the availability of a changing room to nurse (or told to leave). I believe the company made a public apology.

Her: (stammering) Well it's just store policy

Me: People will be hearing about this...(walks out of store)

During this entire exchange my DD had tears streaming down her face, eyebrows bright read and nuzzling my chest. I tried once more to nurse her outside, but she just wouldn't take to it. It's so hot there and can be very crowded. So, I worked on trying to get her to fall asleep in the sling...which she did.

So, what do I do from here? Obviously write Corporate, but should I attempt to organize a nurse-in? Any other people in the Boston area more experienced with this than I am? Thoughts?

In hindsight I shouldn't have even said what I wanted to do. I should have grabbed a bra and headed for the changing area. OR, when she said what she did, I should have grabbed a bra and said, "Then I'd like to try on this bra."

Oh, I'm so sorry this happened to you! I had a bad experience at a VS yesterday (not as bad as you) and called corporate. The customer service person wasn't very helpful (in fact she downright pissed me off.) Maybe instead of a nurse-in JUST in Racine (or Boston), we can do one at Victoria's Secrets across the country?

WTF with VS??? they really need to get a grip! not that every retail chain in this country does, but they are the ones making major bucks off of women's breasts!!!! something should really be started about this! start a letter writing campaign...go to LLL with it, etc. id be happy to help in NH, although i have to admit its been a few years since i bought anything from VS (having not lost baby weight yet, dont have any desire to shop there! lol!).

Now THAT sounds like a great idea!

See, so many things make me upset about that exchange;

1. Breastmilk is unsanitary, but nursing in a bathroom isn't?
2. Your whole product line is geared toward breasts! But I guess not when those breasts are actually put to use.
3. Whatever happened to empowering women?
4. MA really needs some breastfeeding laws on the books.

Well, if breasts were busy feeding babies, they wouldn't be making the money they do by making men horny!

First, did you write or did you just call? I don't think I'm going to even bother calling because I have a feeling I'll experience the same thing you did. I think I'll start letter writing. I emailed Mass Breastfeeding Coalition just a minute ago. I hope they can help out. How do I get LLL involved? Just contact local chapters? I know of at least 1 LLL leader on my yahoo mommy group.

I think that setting up a nurse in would get the piont across better and cause a public stir in the process ..

I'm SO sorry that happened to you! That is beyond rude and uncalled for!

I'd call every news outlet I can think of, call every LLL group I can find (online), and stage a nurse in...complete with as much news coverage as humanly possible, write in to the Editor of every newspaper I can think of.

My mom said to me as we were leaving, "That woman doesn't know who she just messed with". She could already see the wheels turning in my head and knows how much of a lactavist I can be.

This just breaks my heart: "During this entire exchange my DD had tears streaming down her face, eyebrows bright read and nuzzling my chest."

I haven't been in a VS in years (32F boobs'll fix that habit for you) but that is so upsetting that so many have been mistreated. How could it be unsanitary? It's not like you're going to spray milk all over the dressing room! Would FF'ng be unsanitary too??

FWIW any time I have used dressing rooms to nurse I always just bring some clothes with me (although maybe I have actually been trying stuff on, too) I mainly remember nursing in Old Navy dressing rooms. Not that you should be turned away regardless, but to avoid the hassle and stress for your daughter, I guess that's the new MO to adopt.

Nursing in public is not protected in MA.

I'm sorry mama that sucks. That lady should be ashamed of herself.

I agree Amie, I should have not even asked Permission. I should have just grabbed some bras and told her I wanted to try them on. It absolutely broke my heart too. I felt so terrible for my DD. I also thought the same thing. Unsanitary? I wasn't planning on spraying the room down!

: I wonder how they'd take it if you came in while engorged (baby not hungry) and tried on every bra in your size with the milk squirting all over it. "Oh, I'm sorry, I'd love to stop, but I was told that your store policy is not to allow breastfeeding."

I was actually thinking, I'd get more milk in your store by trying on bras! My breasts are going straight in her mouth. I also WAS engorged because she was having such a hard time nursing and I'd had two letdowns by that time.

Good luck. That is ridiculous. Cool that your mom said "don't know who they messed with." though!

I hate that a company that is so geared towards women is so ANTI-women :
I seriously would have just fed her right there as I argued with the woman I would *try* not to accidenly "spray" her

. I really wish DD was more of a quiet content NIP baby, but she just isn't. Otherwise I probably wouldn't have even bothered with the changing room.
