Overheard at a local shop

I was at a local store picking up some things to help childproof my house, and walked over to the 99-cent bargain bins full of plastic cabinet locks, pacifiers, bottles, etc. A group of women, maybe in their mid-20's, came up next to me. What followed:

Woman #1: "Look at the baby bottles."
Woman #2: "That's just what I was about to do. But they're glass bottles. I can't picture [woman's name] messing with glass bottles."
Woman #3: "Yeah, but glass bottles are actually what's best for the baby."

I kinda laughed and mumbled, "As long as there's breast milk in it," and walked on. I was kind of surprised to hear that comment though--I didn't expect a glass bottle vs plastic bottle discussion to go that route.

I would have said "No, actually BREASTS are what's best for the baby." I mean, maybe she couldn't BF, but I doubt that's it as these woman make her sound lazy. And, yes, I REALLY would have said that. Too much concern about the type of container & not enough concern with the actual food being consumed. Blah.

Maybe these ladies do not know the woman all that well (hence buying her gift at the dollar store ) and have no clue how she'll feed her baby.

I'm one of those people who, for my own sanity, always assumes that everyone using bottles or formula has a really good reason, so frankly I'd just be pleased they cared about the plastic v. glass debate.

Baby feeding apparandii - glass is better than plastic, but flesh is the (gold) standard!

That is interesting to say the least and it brings me to say that when I was pregnant with my first, my ob recommended I use glass bottles, since they are better than plastic. I looked at her and said, why do I need bottles, when I intend to breast-feed? She then went on to say how young mamas like their freedom and while some may start out bf they quit, cause they want to have fun and she said I will probably be the same! Well I sure did have fun rubbing her nose in that comment, cause I never did use a glass or plastic bottle!!!
It is so amazing that people are so uninformed/unknowledgable about what is truly best for a baby.

Don't glass bottles break? My DH was hurt by one when he tripped as a toddler. I've never used any bottles, so I really don't know...

Well, it wasn't a dollar store, but they had that 99-cent bargain bin of sale items.

I'd just never heard that about glass bottles, not to mention the issue of what's best for the baby when (ostensibly) the lady in question was going to formula feed. I didn't get into that because I didn't know the people or their story, but I made the comment about breast milk more to myself than anyone else. I just thought that was a strange thing to overhear about bottles.

With my first baby, I bought bottles so that I could feed her juice, because I wasn't yet well-informed enough to know that babies shouldn't be given juice until they're old enough to drink from a cup. Anyway, I spent forever trying to find glass bottles and I finally found some and that's what I bought. I remember that one of the "natural baby product" online shops criticized the store that I bought the glass bottles from for not being bf-friendly, and I understood their point, but at the same time, they praised a different store for selling a devise that facilitates bonding while bottle-feeding, since, if you're going to bottle-feed, you should at least hold the baby while you do it, and I understood their point there too, but it still seemed a little inconsistent to me for them to criticise the store selling the glass bottles, since, if someone who is going to bottlefeed anyway wants to avoid plastic, isn't that a good thing?

Talking about that....did you guys know that on glass bottles of ready to feed Enfamil, there is a disclaimer that this bottle is not intended to be used for breastmilk! It does not say why, however....I asked my LC about it and she said they had a claim of glass being in the bottles? WTH? Well, I used them for my babe. I cleaned them in the dishwasher, put breastmilk in them, and froze them until I needed them. It worked just fine. Enfamil must have heard that mothers were using them to store breastmilk. I guess it was my way of using them for my benefit!!

Wow, I've haven't seen glass bottles in a long time! They still sell them for infants to use?
