SAHD mini rant

I just want to relate an experience I had recently.

I've have actually have quite a lot of support from most people about being a SAHD a few people who try to find out 'when are you going to get back to the real world?' but that doesn't bother me.

Yesterday I heard from a mother in one of my playgroups (she and her husband work full time as teachers) she said she liked the name I made up for my dd to be (due in july), then she related her husband's response:

"well he has a lot of time on his hands"

Some just people don't get it. I'm not really bothered by him saying it or thinking it about me. I'm proud of what I do and know how much work it takes. It just amazes me, some people's attitude!
I actually respect his profession and like his wife or else I could make comments about how easy teaching is and how nice it is to have summers off

I'm sorry I called it a SAHD rant cuz I'm a SAHD but it is absolutely a stay-at-home-person complaint. I have a lot more in common with most SAHM than I do with most working dads.

I heard a statistic that in 1995 the average american dad spent 15 minutes a week with their child. ( I might be misremembering that statistic)

I think anyone that has ever REALLY taken care of a child would know that you don't have lots of time on your hands! People that say things like that (and I hear lots of it) have no idea what they're talking about.

Papachee, I can tell you from my husband's point of view, you are in a most envied position. My husband would love to be the one to say at home with dd. He said this is the only time he has ever wanted boobs! Ha Ha People in our society just don't really value children or the job it is to raise them into good people. I know that you know you are doing a priceless important job but it is annoying to hear the thoughtless comments from others who think you don't work. You have my respect!

my husband would love to do what you are doing, he would love nothing more than to spend the day taking care of our kids. i am in school now, and hopefully one day, i can give him that opportunity. he doesnt think less of the men that do it, in fact, he is quite envious. he wants to be the one to take the kids from school, go grocery shopping and play with legos. (i understand that there is more to it, but you get what i'm saying).

he even wants to be a member at MDC!

( I am the opposite of you I have a lot more in common with SAHDs than SAHMS a lot of times...)

I love the response you thought of about having all that time in the summer LOL

You just remember that you are raising your kiddos not someone else and if they are envious of that so be it

*grin* papachee, I read your post and (forgive me) my first response was a sepulchral, "WELCOME TO *MY* WORLD." But you're right, SAHPs, male or female, don't generally get a lot of respect except from other people who have done it. Something about turning down the chance to get a paycheck just puts us in an idiot underclass, I guess. Just keep reminding yourself what a great gift you're giving to your whole family (including yourself.) And like several other dh's mentioned here, mine would swap places with you in a hot minute if I were well enough to work.

Man , id love to stay home with our daughter, and at the same time, we'd be doing better off than we're doing now. my wife is bowen therapist certified, and we'd probably be out of our condo by now in a home. but my wife is doing a lot of alternative upbringing. ecing, breastfeeding until she's ready, cosleeping, etc... and im supporting that. she's done a hell of alot of reading on subjects, and the way i see it, as long as it wont harm our daughter its fine.
when i come home from work, and things are a shambles here, i usually dont come down on her. i try to understand, that she has a lot of looking after to our daughter.
anyway, keep it up !!
