I know a woman who bf her son

until he weaned himself on his first birthday

what, did he say "i'm ONE now, I'm too old for this crap!"

not to judge her, she's a good mom, I just thought it sounded funny.

My mom still claims that I weaned myself when I was 1. :

My ds weaned himself at 15 mos of age. woke up one morning, and didn't nurse. We went to bed that night, and I realized he hadn't nursed all day. Same day, same thing. He was done.

Hayse, you've just described a nursing strike.

True weaning is a very gradual process, not sudden like that. Sorry, mama.

At least she nursed for a year which is a lot more than most mommas would even consider.

I think that a lot of moms mistake nursing strikes for self-weaning.

I thought my son weaned on his second birthday. He slapped my breast and jumped off my lap. He never asked for noonies again. Could it have just been a nursing strike? How do you know the difference and fix it. I really want dd2 to nurse for a long time and I've been worried she'd wean even earlier since she night weaned at one month ( really--we cosleep topless and she sleeps all night) and doesn't need noonies to fall asleep like ds always did. Not trying to highjack-- just trying to educate myself

Yup! Talked to a woman at church today who said her DS1 weaned at 10 1/2 months, and DS2 weaned at 13 months. Now, I think she was pregnant with DS2 when DS1 weaned, so that might have been legit. I know some babies stop nursing because the milk changes or whatever... but I'm thinking, "Um, that's called a nursing strike..." But since it's all over and done with, I didn't bother. Maybe I should have, in case of future children.

My aunt claims my cousin self-weaned at 6 months. I know lot's of mamas who claimed their babies self-weaned around 10 months and 15 months. I wonder if it is something about the age? Or maybe too many solids being introduced too soon. Lot's of people replace breastmilk with solids instead of supplementing with solids, and that could be a reason, too.

I always thought it was a crazy notion until I was chatting with a family friend of ours. She has 5 children, all co-slept, all breastfed until they decided to stop, all cloth diapered, all homeschooled. She is literally one of the most AP people I know. A couple of her kids bf until they were about 3, one until 5, but #4 simply refused to breastfeed after the age of 9 months. Now I think this woman, after having had 4 self-weaners would be able to recognize a breasfteeding strike. She told me she tried and tried for months, and even tried again when number 5 was born sometime later to offer to number 4, but she just wasn't interested. Broke her heart, but she respected what her babe wanted, I guess.

For sure. I know what you meant in your post, I was mostly replying to all the talk about nursing strikes. Of course, the first time that a child refuses to nurse you shouldn't just throw your hands up in the air and give up, but there are going to be the odd children who just lose interest, kwim?

The first birthday thing is really weird though!! I was thinking that the other day when my MIL tried to put bugspray on Ayla. I said you're not supposed to put it on kids until they're 12 years old. Weird that they're fine at 12 years 1 day but not 11 years 364 days. I always think medications etc. should go by weight. OT, I know. Sorry! :
